One pocket and league...

Skippy and I were playing one pocket yesterday and the day before at our local pool hall. I mentioned to him how many people would ask what kind of game we were playing. Well sure enough on the day before we were on the first table as soon as you walk in the place and right away people were watching and commenting. There were about 10 people who asked us what we were doin or what kind of break stradegy were we trying or that the 8 ball was in the wrong spot before breaking. I could see how this might be confusing for people who aren't around pool much.

Well yesterday was league night for the "Local Pros"(Sarcasm). Skippy and I again played one pocket close to where the league players would play. Again we were getting funny looks from these guys. So one of them came up to me and ask what game we were playing. He had never heard of the game and wanted an explanation of how it was played. As soon as I told him he went back to his table and they all gathered around in a huddle to hear what info I had given him on this game. Apparently, they had never heard of it either.

Do these league players think that 8 ball and 9 ball were the only games created in billiards? The guy was so confused on the whole thing. Funny to me and Skippy. Thought I'd share it with you. I'm not trying to bad mouth any league players. But you know as well as I do, on the table, some of them think their s**t don't stink...

Yes. It has happened to me more times than I can count. What is really funny is when the drunk walks up right as you break and laughs his ass off because he thinks you suck at breaking....

I will say that about 6 months ago I had an older gentleman playing next to me while I was playing 1p with a friend. He watched for about 20 minutes then came up to us and said, "you know, it's been probably 20 years since I have seen a good one pocket game, because all you see anymore is 9 ball. Glad to see some people like the game."

:D

Yep ...

And if you play 14.1, you will get the same type of comments,
and you end up having to say "Straight Pool", and they will
say, "Oh, I have heard of that before"...... every single time....lol

I've known the game for quite a while, but only started playing it recently for a change of pace and to help in pocketing balls. I can honestly say that it could get addicting like golf just because of the thought process and the imagination of shots you can come up with. It definetly isn't for everybody, but people should try it at least once.

Good to see you and Skippy practicing for me...now who wants 9-7?

*grin*

I'll take 9-7...I have no idea how to play though (and no, I'm not joking about that)

Nevermind the fact he wants to rob me in my own home?

Puh-lease.

Mama didn't raise no fool.

Shorty

That should be to your advantage. He is trying to even it up with that statement.

Speaking of one pocket, I was in a local pool room last week just trying to run some balls by myself and a guy came over and asked if I wanted to play some 1p. I told him I know the rules but I've never played it, but I would be glad to play him a game so I could learn. He said "No thanks, I want some competition, I'm one of the best one pocket players in here". Then he asked me if I wanted to play some 8 ball for money. I told him "You just told me you are one of the best 1 pocket players, why would I want to play you 8 ball for money"? Then he tried to bum a cigarette, which I didn't have, and went away. It was kind of funny and kind of weird at the same time.

From the little I've seen of it 1 pocket looks like an interesting game.

malakas, strong.

I really enjoy playing one pocket... quite a bit more relaxing than playing 9-ball and you are rewarded much more for cueball and speed control. You can't get away with hitting the balls a million miles an hour every shot like in 9-ball. Playing one pocket has improved my speed control and banks immensly.

And if Shorty wants some action I think I got that 9-7 covered. Not on his table though... thats worth an extra ball at least.

Wanna shoot at Players on the VIP table then or rather the double shimmed table? 20 a game? You getting 9-7 and alternating break?

Gotta go with the shimmed table... and all that sounds fine. You gotta find your own ride though... I don't wanna hear you whining about your "bad rolls" or the "crappy tables" or the "loud music" on the ride home after I stomp ya. ;)

By the way while you're there I'll back ARM against you playing even 9-ball for whatever you wanna bet. I hear there is some unfinished business there. ;)

I will see what I can do...but I thought you said you no longer played any? *smirk*

And as far as ARM, he has his own money...that was between he and I as friends. He knows he has that game anytime he wants. You may want to ask him who covered most of the table time though in the VIP room.

Shorty

I've been playing a bit the last few days... stroke feels good so I might as well let it ride eh? Especially playing 1-hole where I don't have to let the stroke out much... thats where most of the rust collects for me anyhow.

Skippy

LOL. I really got you thinking you could beat me huh? That hilarious. You might want to reach for a more realistic goal too on that other thread. I don't see it happening in this life. Post up whenever you feel like playing Shorty. Unlike you Skippy knows how I play. That's why he mentioned backing me.

I talked to Jeff W. last night during another game of one pocket and he told me that you (Shorty) said that you were supposed to get the 8 out in 9 ball. Got news for you. You need more than the 8 out from him. Try 7 out and 3 games on the wire, race to 7. Bet high too so that he stays awake.
