One Pocket Format

hello everyone, and i hope you forgive this very basic question from someone thats new to the various billiard disciplines. in college about all we played was 8 ball and some occassional 9 ball. so, i have never played one pocket, and havent ever seen it played either.

i was wondering if someone here could tell me how its played? how is the break shot played, how are the balls racked, how is the game scored, etc, etc.

this newcomer appreciates any help!

Thanks for the link Dave. But i am still confused. I didnt see anything in that link where it said how to keep score? It mentioned running out, but how do you run out? do you have to run all 15 balls? Or once you get at least 8 of the balls into your pocket you win the point? Do you have to shoot the balls in any kind of rotation? What kind of scoring system is used?

Again, i apologize for these questions, but I would like to learn the basics of one pocket.

Keeping score: You keep score by putting every ball you pocketed "in your hole" on your side of the table above the ball return. If you have a drop pocket table, you leave your balls inside your corner pocket. If the pocket gets too full, you can move your balls to the side pocket on your side of the table.

Running balls:
You can hit any ball. There is no regard to the rotation order of the balls, solids/stripes, etc. Once you make any 8 balls in your hole, you win the game. If your opponent makes balls in your hole, they count for you. He continues to shoot if he also made a ball in his own hole on the same stroke (unless the ball he made in your hole was your game ball). Balls made in any of the 4 neutral pocket spot up at the end of your inning. If you scratch, ALL balls pocketed on that stroke spot up, AND you spot up an additional ball of your own. If you don't have one, you put a penny on the rail by your pocket signifying you owe a ball.

where do you live/play? I play one-pocket. Low intermediate level but I know a few moves...
