One pocket question?

After a scratch, what is the official ruling in determining what ball is eligible to be shot at? Is it the belly of the object ball being over the line, or does the entire ball have to be over the line?

From my 35 years of one pocket knowledge 99% of the time is the edge of ob has to be passed the line, if you have a laser beam line on OB (actually i have a 1$ laser in my case-from dollar store) shoot the beam over the head string line straight if you see the beam at the other rail you can shoot the ball, otherwise the beam will be on the OB and cannot shoot it.

1p at my house

i think its hard to tell by looking at the edge or curve of the ball, so we use the base, if the base is touching the head string it cannot be shot.

but most of the time with beer involved, its up to the shooter to shot it or not

I think this is right.

Unless one pocket rules are different than general pool rules, the base of the ball where it touches the cloth determines where it is. People may play where they want the full ball over the line, does not make it the correct rule. Same way as any of the bar rules are used by many yet are not "correct".

A. it's MUCH easier to see where that is on the table
B. that is the part that is actually on the playing surface
C. if you count the full ball with the edge of the ball as it's location, then any ball hanging over the pocket lip is IN the pocket and should just be dropped in.

here is your answer
only at the derby city classic is the rule that the object ball must be completely over the line
from dcc rules
Ball in the Kitchen: The “base of the ball” rule does not apply. To be playable, object balls must be completely out of the kitchen. The edge of the ball may not touch or overlap the head string even if the base of the ball is completely outside the kitchen. The decision of the referee is final.
......
everywhere else the world pool and billiard association rules apple which is base of ball
...from wpa rules
..
6.11 Bad Play from Behind the Head String
When the cue ball is in hand behind the head string, and the first ball the cue ball contacts is also behind the head string, the shot is a foul unless the cue ball crosses the head string before that contact. If such a shot is intentional, it is unsportsmanlike conduct.
The cue ball must either cross the head string or contact a ball in front of or on the head string or the shot is a foul, and the cue ball is in hand for the following player according to the rules of the specific game
.....
when gambling you play by the rules agreed to...:D

Whomever thinks it's easier to rule the entire ball rather than the base (where the rubber hits the road so-to-speak) hasn't drawn their head string line yet and is trying to eyeball from the rail diamond to the rail diamond.

Seriously, why these lines are not drawn on tables that tournaments are played on is beyond me. Head string line, rack outline, and footspot to center diamond on the short rail for ball spotting. All these lines are as important a part of the game as they are in any sport that requires line judging, but you hardly see them drawn.

True if the table have the head string line drawn, without it it is hard to judge it under the ball, therefore the side of the ball is easier to line up with the dots on the rails. Kinda like plumb Bob string or laser beam
