One Pocket Rules - Calling Accidental Foul on Self

…the classic test of "did the cue ball go forward of the tangent line unnaturally?"

Ever tried calling such a foul on your opponent during <insert social pool league name of your choice here> league play, and trying to explain it? The ensuing argument isn’t worth it. These days I wait until their turn is over and then tell them they had fouled and I that will call it on them if they do it again.

Yes, playing at Derby City is quite different. From the current Derby City rules, available online:

Double Hits, Push Shots, and Miscues
Object balls frozen to the cue ball or very close to the cue ball, require you to elevate the cue approximately 45 degrees to stroke the shot. This will be considered a legal shot even though a double hit may occur. Even with an elevated cue, you cannot place the cue tip on the cue ball and shove it forward or it will be called a push shot and result in a foul.
In my specific instance, it was a case where the cue ball rebounded into the tip after contact, close to the rail. Unless a viewer was directly overhead watching for it, no one would have known. And it wasn't something you would have expected from the way i addressed the shot. I just screwed up, and didn't get the cue out of the way quick enough, and I only barely registered noticing the second contact. Nonetheless... I done screwed up ;)

I wasn't referring to DCC regarding the difference in rules, but moreso the much higher level event, compared to lowly ol' league. I'd like to think I'd still behave properly, even tho the stakes were much higher. I'll likely never know, as I doubt I'll ever get to DCC.

Yeah, many players don't know or understand that rule so it turns into two people accusing each other of cheating. It's a bit of an obscure rule for the casual player. I think in league it's fair to expect them to know the rule.

I suppose you could show them the shot after the game. Or present it as a challenge: how close can you put the cue ball to the object ball and play a stop shot with a level cue stick?

That's a great idea!
I had someone shoot a ball straight in on me last night, they were probably 1/4" apart, and the cue ball followed right behind the object ball from the far side of the table and almost scratched in the same pocket.
He just didn't know any better, and I couldn't be bothered to even bring up the double hit. He might have appreciated me explaining it to him afterwards. He did ask me to play BCA rules. I think he was still pretty unfamiliar with them.
