"...any balls pocketed in the opponent’s pocket on a stroke that ends in either a pocket scratch or with the cue ball off the table are not to be counted for the opponent, and are to be immediately spotted."

"Any balls pocketed either accidentally or intentionally into the opponent’s pocket are counted for the opponent, unless on the same stroke, either the cue ball pocket scratches or jumps off the table."

if a player scratches and pockets the opponent's ball,
why not let the object ball stay down? why spot?
seems like that rule could be taken advantage of, but I'm not hip.

ps I looked for a 1p forum here for the first time, and couldn't find it..anybody got a map or does that city not exist?

Nothing counts on a foul stroke, all pocketed balls spot. And yes, it does indeed play into strategy.

Say we both need 1, last ball is hanging in your pocket. Without the rule, thats end game right there.

With the rule, I can pocket the ball and follow it in, or jump the rail and go off the table. That ball spots, and I owe one for the foul I committed. So 2 balls spot, score is 7-6 you.

Exactly. Game would be a joke without this rule. Its ALWAYS been the rule.

exactly...

making an opponents ball that's deep in his pocket and intentionally scratching is a VERY big part of this game.
