One Pocket Rules

Just started playing a little one pocket and I think I could learn to like the game. I have read the rules but find certain things a bit vague.

Is it legal to call safe and shoot a ball into a non target pocket?

Dave...You never have to identify safeties in 1-pocket (just as there are no called shots). Therefore, if you shoot a ball into any pocket other than your own, it comes back out, and your turn ends. The exception would be if you shoot a ball in your opponent's pocket...it stays in, and counts for them (unless you shoot it in and scratch at the same time...in which case the ball you shot in is spotted, along with one of your own).

Its a thinking game. My opponent, Half-fast Larry, had a hanger deep in his pocket. Ha, I know the rules. I don't want to give him a point but I would like that hanger out of there. I'll sink that hanger and scratch, no score for Larry. I wasn't looking far enough ahead. I rolled the cb to Larry and he picked it up with a smile, placed it in the kitchen and ran 3 easy shots. Live and learn, if you live.

Don't listen to them Dave. You do have to call 'safe', and not only that, you have to put it in writing at least four working days prior to the call and send it to the BCA. A representative will review your 'safety' and respond accordingly.
Should your request for a 'safety' be approved you will then have twenty-four hours to execute said 'safety' without incurring a delay of game penalty.
I hope this clears up any confusion you may have regarding 'safeties' in One Pocket.

P.S. And remember. Don't always believe what these people tell you.

Dave, you've illustrated one of the more frustrating circumstances in one-pocket: when your opponent only needs one, and it's hanging in his pocket!

As you've discovered, there's no problem if there is no ball that he can neither make, nor legally shoot from the Kitchen, after you've made his hanger and followed it in with the CB.

For that reason, experienced players will take special care not to allow their opponent to be in the situation where they only need one. Oftentimes the opponent will need two, and have on hanging in the jaws. With the right lay, rather than just pocketing that ball, good players will follow it in with the CB so that the opponent will still need two-- even though the shooter owes a ball.

But when you're faced with that situation where he can easily get out after you've scratched, then you have no choice but to shoot at a flyer or other difficult shot to your own hole, and hope that it goes in! When that situation comes up, take your best shot. If you miss, pay him off, and move on to the next game.

Thanks Tramp and Doc. Good advice.

Tramp, I see by your avatar that you are leaving. Bon Voyage.

Dave here is a situation were your opponent has a ball hanging in his pocket. He has 7 and you have 6. What if your attempt to follow the ball in backfires and double kisses and the CB doesn't go in? He wins of course. So the answer here is to jack up, pocket his ball, and jump the CB off the table. Same result as following it in without the risk from certain positions on the table.

Tramp,
Many thanks for the clarification on the new rules. It's great to see that they are doing something that will speed up the game.
