The system you described is perfect for aiming to pocket the 5.
Hitting the correct speed would remove the 9-ball bank, and leave a tough bank on the 12 without assitance from the 5 ball making the pocket bigger...
If the player then pulls of the bank on the 12....(they probably deserved to win that game)
just a thought...
Holy Moly! I never even thought of that! I don't like trying to make the 5, though. If you can pocket the 5 though, this would definitely be the situation to try it, as right now, yer in a hurt locker.
If one was to try to die on the rail right behind the 5, and were able to beat the kiss, this might be the result:
Pros:
1. Removes the 9 from being bankable.
2. Breaks up the combo aimed at the 5.
3. Gets behind the 5 reliably and prevents opponent from putting you up table. (If you can avoid the kiss)
4. The balls moved from the combo might block all bank paths to your opponent's pocket.
Cons:
1. Moves balls closer to your opponent's pocket.
2. If you don't get the cue ball close to the 5, your opponent may be able to get you to the other side of the stack.
All in all, I think this is a decent option for someone who can execute it. Everything hinges on beating the kiss from the 9 ball coming back off the rail. It stops you from losing the game immediately, and at this point, this might be the most you can hope for in this situation.
It really would depend on how I felt, and my opponent's skill level, as to whether I try this shot or not. I think this shot might even be in Winning One Pocket or SMAS.. I don't have my copies here, so I can't check..
Let me know what you think, everyone..
edit: Looking at the diagram closer, I don't like where the cue ball ends up.. All sorts of options for the opponent. I like the follow/carom to pocket the 5, but I think the kiss is on, because you have to hit the 9 thinner...
