One Pocket

A lot of good suggestions here. What I found that helped me the most and quickly was to play partners One Pocket and your partner was allowed to coach. One drawback is that folks can take too much time talking and that takes the fun out of it.
I did that and nobody knew what they were talking about. That’s when I decided to employ a professional instructor. Learn take outs. Strategy. Turn defensive into offensive. Play the score. Play to win or survive the inning. For now break the rack gently.. take ball in hand and run balls into one pocket.

I should have included that you should have good shooting skills and then ask good One Pocket players to play with them. You need good basic skills first. Sorry I neglected that.

a·nath·e·ma /əˈnaTHəmə/ noun: kicking in one pocket.

My questionable memory causes me to want to say that kicking in one pocket is addressed somewhere in AZB thusly: "never, unless you are mad at your backer". Who's the culprit?
Trying to kick a ball into your pocket, maybe. There are times when it is appropriate though. Kicks into the stack and for defense come up often.
If your kick game is weak, your one pocket game is weak.

The number ONE skill in one pocket, which I am sure everyone that reads this will agree, is superior cue ball control. In all aspects.

Being able to match your cue ball reality to the creative prediction you see in your head.

You need it to force run out opportunities, and you need it to run out.

I very much enjoy playing one cushion on a pool table. It is fun in itself, and great for developing skills in all games, especially one pocket.

Maybe play around with one cushion? It won’t hurt.

1.Go to poolhall 2.Ask if someone plays 1p. 3. Start playing Seriously that's about it. There are books and videos if you want to go that route. Watch it on YT, lots of good matches to learn from. Join OnePocket.org, good site with a lot of info.
Pretty much this post, but,,,,,,,, if it seems boring bet more.

Kicking is very important in one pocket ...do it all the time
Someone who can't kick at one pocket -- like a crippled fawn with the wolfpack descending. 💸

that's true, and one pocket will up your kicking game - you better learn to kick the defensive three railer or you're toast. i think he meant one rail kicks to singular balls though, which is a good rule to follow.

i think tony chohan would like to talk to you about that....😂
kicking a ball towards your pocket and drifting behind a ball or the stack can be very powerful

tony's my favorite player but my last advice to anyone getting into one pocket is trying what he does. he's not human

Exactly. If I could shoot 1/2 as good as Chohan, I would have no use for rules. He threw the book away a long time ago,

Good place to start: Spend some time learning to break properly for 1P. You can “play the ghost” but its hard to realistically play safeties against yourself, so once you have the break shot down, go to the pool hall and prepare to be humbled.

Learn the banking/kicking tracks. Cue ball control is everything. Study trapping and getting out of the trap.

for the most part i agree with you regarding tony being super human
and not the best "role model" for most players learning onepocket
but some of his shots can be done by mortals
my kicking example for one

"The Art of One Pocket" suggests that when you practice your break, you also practice the counter to the break, and keep playing as both players until one player makes a ball or the stack is broken up, then rack and re-break. Doing that should give you practice playing safeties against yourself.

a really great way just to practice is to put three balls on the spot and then "break" for a pocket. then alternate shots trying to score just like the part of a normal endgame. this is also a fun way to practice with a group where the games are short and fun.

There are several "breaks" you can use including kicking two rails into the stack of three balls, one rail at the stack, crossing the front ball and coming to rest on the end rail etc. Overall this is just a great way to practice end-game.

I've messed around with this, take a small object and mark the pocket you're playing to when you break. Once you've played move the small object to the other. It's actually really good cb control and safty play.

It’s balls and a stick man:)

Just start playing. You’ll pick it up naturally.

Be careful watching pro matches. They shoot the wrong shots for average players. If you shoot their shots you’ll sell out all the time.
