Onyx tip

i have tried le pro, moori, kamui balck ss, sniper & onyx was the last one....in the beginning i liked the onyx but after it wearing down half way it started glazing rather often, was getting some miscues. went back to the sniper which i was most pleased to start with but wanted to try something else. got my new sniper last week, and like before, no problems....

Looking for any opinion on these. Like them hate them?
Do they perform well?

It's a nice tip until it starts to glaze over. Very similar to the sniper once it breaks in. It doesn't lose it's shape. Very nice grip but not as grippy as the kamui black SS. Nice hit. It was my favorite tip until I tried the Ultraskin medium. The Ultraskin medium is extraordinary.

Onyx tip is my tip of choice too. Easy to install, not much maintenance needed and they last long.

Two big thumbs up.

I've used one for 9 months now after having the Tiger Sniper. This is my absolute favorite tip ever. It's probably worn about halfway down, but I like to the tip pick and give it an occasional scuff more than the average player. Like maybe once a week or so, as a piece of mind thing.

My Onyx mushroomed ever so slightly within the first month as it settled with break-in. A quick trim and it's been perfect since then.

I figure I can get almost 1 1/2 years out of this Onyx, which I think is perfectly acceptable.

However, the "feel" of a tip is such a personal thing, you never really know till you try.

glaze

what does glaze mean? and whats an ultraskin medium?

glaze in my opinion is where the tip seem to get a shinny glaze over it and it is hard to keep chalk on= mis- cues. also seems the tip gets harder.

this topic is very easy to get divided opinions, you are just going to have to try different tips out yourself.

(ultraskin tips) are a new (cue tip) out on the market, offered by one of our az members tom hay they are a good tip and they dont break the bank in cost. Tom is top notch to deal with .

here is a picture of the old style tips , but the new style have different stamp. I hope this answers your questions.

I like Onyx tips a lot, you can't go wrong with them. Great performance, spin transfer, good medium feel, etc. I also noticed the problem after months of play that the tip would tend to glaze over more easily and I would be constantly scuffing the tip.

For the money, I would definately contact TomHay on this site and grab some UltraSkins. They play amazing and are super affordable, plus Tom is a great guy to deal with.

Thanks for the infomation.
I hate it when tips glaze over.
That is one of the reasons that I don't use the Kamui black tips.

So it seems to me that all of these black tips will have more of a tendency to galze over.

Maybe I should just stick to the tan or brown tips all together?

Onyx is tigers answer to kamui black. Decent tips but as much as i hate to admit it sue to MAP pricing but kamuis really are tough to beat. I hate giving them my money but they really r the best

Where does one find these UltraSkins that people keep talking about?

Not to hijack the thread or anything........

I have been playing with mine almost a year now and have been fortunate to not have any of the glazing problems people are speaking of. I shape my tip and scuff it as needed, but do not need to do it as much with the Onyx as much as I have with others in the past. I have never played a Kamui tip so I can not compare them.

I used a Kamui brown med. for a couple of years and liked it a lot until it wore down too much.

Then with all the hype over the Kamui blacks I tried a Kamui black med. on a different cue. Much to hard for me and seemed to glaze a bit.

However, on my main shooter I then switched out the Kamui brown med. for a Kamui black soft on one shaft. And, put an Onyx on it's other shaft. The Onyx was only O.K. and did not give me nearly as nice a feeling hit as the Kamui black soft.

So, I've been using the Kamui black soft shaft exclusively for 6+ months now. Absolutely no problems and I love it. Even though I have all the tip maintence tools and used to groom my other different tips all the time, I haven't done a thing to the Kamui black soft except chalk before every shot with Blue Diamond chalk.

Maybe it's time to replace my Onyx tip with an Ultraskin and compare.

Kamui black are the best tips on the market, though I have never tried these ultraskin tips. Only problem with Kamui blacks is they are somewhere inconistent. If you get a good one, it will be your favorite tip in the world, if you get a bad one you will hate it. I am not sure why this is, maybe just a low standard of quality control?
