Opening Break shot in Straight Pool.

I thought it would interesting to discuss opening break shots in Straight Pool.

I will give 2 that I remember.

My idea of an opening break shot would be:

Somantically you are correct Greenie. But I think we all know what he is asking: Post you straight pool breakshots 14:1, not 15 at the very open.

Funny thing is no matter how hard I try on the open (15) breakshot like in you wei diagram. I can never get it right in competition!

I am talking about the 1st break of a new game. Do you go for it (show us) or play a safety break (still show us). My illustrations were 2 opening breaks that can pocket a ball starting a new game of 14.1.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Scott, I totally didn't understand what you were getting at. Now that I do understand, I'll have to admit ignorance. I haven't got a clue how to predictably make a ball on a straight pool break. I'd love to learn though. Then again, I'd like to meet someone in my city that actually plays straight pool, that in itself would vastly improve my learning of the game.

Actually Scott, you had a cut-and-paste slip-up that I think you're still unaware of. Both the links in your original post go to the same CueTable diagram, and it's one you posted in the "pros dogging shots" thread. It shows only an 8 and a 9 ball, and arrows illustrating a good player dogging a shot

That said, I also have nothing to contribute here, since I couldn't make a called shot out of a 15-ball rack to save my life.

OK, I was looking at that same 8 & 9 ball layout wondering what kind of straight pool break is he talking about all there is here is a key ball and break ball, and this doesn't look how to play them to me....

But now I've found the right link, and now I know you may not be a sissy-boy, Scott - but you must be crazy! The % on these looks like much less than 50-50 to me! And OBs will be spread so nice for your opponent he should tip you out of his winnings!
Out of curiosity what % of either do you make?

Safe on opening break

I have played a lot of straight pool , its the first game my father got me playing and I can not recall anyone starting a game with anything other than an opening safe shot. If your playing anyone good your miscalculation could cost you many balls. Its also important never to change your game depending on who your playing so learn a good opening safe and stick to it, the difference between a novice and a high ranked player is a high ranked player could have a 60 or more ball run going and run into trouble and play safe rather than opening the pack in the hopes of making a shot. Good luck 14-1 is a great game.

I made the first one three times in a row, back in '67. Haven't played much straight pool since '70.

I posted the corner ball bank shot, as an opening break shot, in the other thread on 14.1. This is not a tough shot, but needs to be hit with precision for any percentage makability. I've known older 14.1 players who could make this shot 80% of the time...which is very high percentage. For me, it's probably in the 30-40% range...but a fun opening shot nonetheless.
