Opinions on discussion forums

Hi, Everyone.

I have been reading posts and their resulting discussions for a number of months here and, after reading some of the material in one of the longer "Cue Gallery" threads, felt I would communicate some of my thoughts on what I have seen. I have no intention of naming names, or purporting to be some kind of intellectual superior with respect to generally accepted rules of societal structure. However, I have repeatedly seen something that I feel takes away from the potential value and enjoyment of a number of the more interesting threads I have seen. I am referring to the seeming lack of respect for other people's opinions, to which we are all entitled, and the confusing sense of entitlement to openly criticize other members that generally accompanies that. This is definitely not something I have seen from everyone, as many of the members I think are very knowledgeable and experienced with the pool and cue industry and personal collecting. They also seem like very good people to listen to. However, from my perspective, this is a forum to discuss pool and cues and why we all love having it as a hobby, or livelihood for some. I don't believe it is a forum to be used to attack people personally, for any reason. That can be done through email, phone calls, or predetermined face to face encounters. Everyone has the right to express their opinions, but I always think they should be expressed with maturity, respect and an open mind to hear and consider what others are willing to take the time to share. An opinion validated through minimizing the value of those belonging to someone else isn't, in my opinion, worth hearing at all.

We all have different backgrounds, bank accounts, levels of skill on the table, and personal preferences for specific cuemakers and their choices of designs, original or otherwise. Personally, I love Bill McDaniel cues, but not because I necessarily dislike other cuemakers' works. I have used a number of them and decided I was ultimately happiest buying and playing with his cues. I would not criticize anyone for feeling differently. They make their money and they have the right to spend it on whatever kind of cue they like. That is their life, this is mine.

On a personal note, I spend my days working as a therapist in a prison for mentally ill, and some just plain nasty, federal offenders. Believe me, there is more than enough dysfunction and unecessary nastiness in the world without letting it take away from the hobby we all love.

Just my thoughts.

I think I have a good idea of what you are talking about.

Unlike many other message boards I've visited, this forum doesn't seem to have any official written Code-of-Conduct list. Such lists usually include the following:

1) no profanity
2) no pornography, adult links, etc...
3) no posting personal attacks at any mod or other forum user
4) no irrelevant, off-topic posts
5) no spamming, advertising, etc... except in designated forums
6) Failure to comply = temporary or permanent ban, depending on seriousness of violation.

If such a list does exist, can you please provide the URL?

Thanks...

In the main forum there is a "sticky" labled forum rules. Second from the top.

Two things:

1) That rules-of-behavior post should really be stickied in every forum, not just the main forum

2) I see no recent enforcement of those rules here.

Bottom line: the mods are MIA...

Other message boards I've visited also include a "Click here to report post" URL next to every message, allowing questionable material to be red-flagged for review immediately. This way, the mods don't have to read through every post to find the rule-breakers.

I'd like to see any recent signs of moderation in this forum... So far, I can't find any.

Maybe because the threads that have violated rules have been deleted!(This can be proven)
The reduction in the member list might be another clue!(This can't)
But both of these I believe to be true.
If anyone else has any additional signs to add then please do so.

a forum is like real life,,,,except in real life you don't go around picking arguments with everyone you meet. the forum board is a lightning rod for arguments to break out simply because forums ARE ONLY about people giving opinions, and it's easy to get in and out of confrontations.

there are quite a few who do all this contrarian stuff with a twinkle in their eye,,,,,it's for fun,,,,but it doesn't necessarilty READ that way.

jimbo and iconcue, for instance, used to jump on each other mercilessly all the time, but i know they have a deeeep and,,,,,,everlasting, and,,,close and closer still, warmth for each other's company. have you noticed that since icon was banned, we are seeing less of jimbo?? i believe jimbo is in mourning.

is it possible to "unmember" yourself?,,to relinquich your membership, and that it's recorded in the membership roster. unlike banning, where you get wiped off the face of the earth, does it still show up that you're a member?

When someone violates policy in the other forums I visit, the offending post is usually locked and edited to cite which rules were violated. This leaves a very visible example of how not to use such forums.

The problem with simple thread deletion is that the incident simply gets forgotten, instead of being used as a positive learning experience.

Just sharing what I've seen on more heavily moderated forums... nothing more.

Nice post Bru, although I don't think I miss Jeff :-D
People don't get how boring it would be if everyone who posted shared the same opinion. People can only learn from differing opinions when they are put forth with facts and backed up and not just turned to personal attacks. Also the more serious someone is about their opinion the more they will defend it and often times it get's heated, but disagreeing is how we learn, you need to learn to read threw the insults and pick out the gems of wisdom, or easier, just don't read threads that you feel are going bad.
