I think if there were a poll...

Bluegrass would take it. Hit is subjective, Kerry Zeiler (ZYLR) is very particular about the hit of his cues, that is why he only makes merrywidow style cues. Richard is very particular too. Bluegrass will cost you a bit more from what I have seen, could have had two ZYLRs recently for 850, the cheapest bluegrass was about 950.

I like my bluegrass. Never played with a Zylr. however, keep this in mind, Bluegrass is proven..while zylr is good, i have seen him hit a peek about 6-8 months ago and now it seems sugartree has replaces that status and his cue prices have dropped a bit. Bluegrass has always been bluegrass, and is up there for play and resale value. I just bought a cocbolo plain jane for about 1000 (leather wrap) used, love the hit! Its my daily cue now, and i dont intend on changing it.

I have a BlueGrass and it's great, but a little heavy for me. (PM sent).
I have a Zylr on order, only two more years! I hear Kerry's waiting list is around 31/2-4 yrs now, Harris isn't taking new orders at all. Both great cues.

Cues

Both are great cues. I will say that Bluegrass cues are very popular and don't lose too much value. However, i will also say that I wouldn't want to get rid of my Zylr unless just the perfect deal came along. I've had many offers on it. They hold their value well also. This is a hard decision, that's for sure. I would definitely look at what you want in the cue, looks, hit, materials....that sort of thing and see which one can do it for you, or which one you can find.

Bluegrass, Zylr, Sugertree

We will definately have all 3 available in our booth #30 at the SBE. Try and stop bye and check em out side by side.

I recently traded my Skip Weston hoppe for a Zylr, and I'm very happy. It was wild: we agreed to a deal, he mailed me a cue, I mailed him one, we both lived happily ever after.

Regarding the Zylr vs Sugartree thing - keep in mind that Zylr cues still play like they did when you couldn't get one...and you still can't get one unless you buy it used. Sugartrees might be popular now because they hit great, but it might also be partly because of the long wait.

The fact that secondary Zylrs are a little lower in price now than a year ago is because more people are putting them on the market at about the same time - I read that as meaning that a few people who liked soft-hitters bought Zylrs when they were really hot, and weren't happy with the hit. Now they are getting rid of them and others are misreading the results. Take advantage of the price drop and buy one.

I would like to try a Sugartree, but I'm not going to beg, borrow or steal to do so. They too will drop in price in a year or so and will become available. Everybody wants fancy ivory inlays, and those cues are the only ones that stay steadily high, IMO - like Herceks.

Thanks for all the input. I understand hit is subjective, but can anybody give me a hit and feel comparison between the 2 cue builders....

I've seen plenty of Bluegrass PJs for sale, whereas only 5 or 6 Zylr's. The fact is, most of the Zylr's that go up for sale either lack the Buckhorn collars on the shafts, or have the uni-loc pin rather than 3/8-11. The Uni's don't play as good in my opinion.

I would put a 3/8-11 buckhorn to buckhorn Zylr up there w/ the very best hitting cues.

A lot of them have retapered shafts as well.
You change the flex point or taper of Zylr's shafts, you just modified the cue. :)
Z's have stiff forearms and stiff shafts.

I wouldn't count on any price drops on Sugertree's anytime soon. The wait list just keeps getting longer. As far as the small fluctuation in the Zylr prices goes it is usually the uni-loc pin cues or the ones without buckhorn throught or undersize shafts that you see in the secondary market. The right cue still brings all the money. I would agree with the previous poster in that it usually a cosmetic upgrade (inlays) that a consumer is seeking when they trade one of Kerry's cues.

I agree with the buckhorn to buckhorn statement. My Zylr happens to have a 3/8x11 pin, and buckhorn butt cap, joint, joint collars, and ferrules. Great hitting cue....thus the reason I find it very hard to sell/trade it. - John

I don't agree with this statement regarding sugartree cue. One, he's not taking anymore orders right now until he's caught up. Two, his price, direct from him, are quite reasonable.

Regarding Zylr, Bluegrass and Sugartree cue, they are all fine cues and, in most people's eye, stiff hitting cue.

Of my cues, my Zylr is probably the stiffest hitting cue but it has a lot to do with thinner shaft shaft it has on there.

bluegrass hands down

i have played with both and imo and a few others around me bluegrass all the way. i say this as i have sold the 4 i had. i am looking for another. jmo
