ORCOLLO vs HERNANDEZ action at MASTERS

I don't think Frankie was out of line at all! You don't have to be a personal admirer of his to acknowledge that he is no slouch when it comes to catching a gear for the cheese. After all, at one point he was up 12 games in the 15-ahead set. The problem is that I don't think his cue ball control, table management skills and temperament are suited to the requirements of 10-ball. I can tell you this--if the game was 9-ball, where Frankie's break could really come into play, that kind of weight would break Dennis' back!
Had the pockets been wider too. I think that this was Dennis' major consideration for agreeing to give the 6.

Kiamco giving weight to Park and still wins? Are only Filipinos give weights? Or maybe a good question is, are there any Filipino players who has received weights from any player?

lemme rephrase that for you inorder to be clearer. do you know any Filipino players given some weight playing non-Filipino players?

I hope I don't get slammed for this, but, yes, I can think of one Filipino player that I had heard was given weight by a non-Filipino player. It was "Jalapena" who, last time I heard, was staying in Jersey.

Jalapena? Sounds hot chili. Is he a top player? Why will you get slammed, surely there are Filipinos who also get weights, not all of them are that good.

He wins if he legally pots the 6ball or the 10 ball. This is a pretty strong handicap since the player getting such only needs to runout 6 balls to win unless his opponent broke and pocketed the 6. If the opponent did, legally pocket the 6, then the player getting the handicap also only has the 10 to win.
thanks i get it now can you win if you combo the 6 or do it from the break ??

Wild

There's a difference between a "wild" 6 and a "call" 6. A call 6 has to be called, so if you make it on the break that's no good. So a wild 6 is a bigger handicap.

Sorry JAM, I'll make this clearer this time around. are there any professional top tier Filipino pool players given weight?

Jalapena does sounds like a mexican hot chili ! lol, j/k ! :D :D :D
anyway, there is a truth to his monicker ! a combination of his name and that of a lil' green hot chili pepper. I think the "A" vowel in the end is more appropriate to use than the "O" when eating Jalapeno. You wouldn't say O when eating it aren't ya? :D

Al Lapena

Al Lapena is a very good player. I don't know who gave him weight, but Lapena probably won.

call 6

I have heard that good players, if they are giving the call 6 (or 7, 8 9) will rack the balls so that the 6 will fall on the break. Playing "call", after the break it's an even game, the handicap is gone!

They call him that coz he's hot as chili when he's playing lights out ! btw, JAM, do you have any idea who was that opponent of Jalapeno that gave him a handicap? or does Al's opponent know who Al was? it's not the Iceman was it? Chili on Ice don't match together pretty well.

Well, since you asked, yes, I do happen to know who the opponent was of Jalapena that gave him weight. :p

The game was one-pocket, and he was given 2 balls, 9-7, by Keith McCready. I only mentioned this match-up because it is one that I personally witnessed. It happened after a Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut. There was lots of side-betting going on, and Keith was lucky enough to come out winner, much to the delight of those who bet on him. :D

Here's a picture after the match with one of Keith's buddies, a very happy Genie Man, displaying some of their winnings. ;)

P.S. Later in the year, Filipino Champion Ronnie Alcano was voted as Player of the Year on the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour, and he faced Keith McCready in a finals match at Berlin, Connecticut, in which Keith barbecued him 9 to zero in approximately 15 minutes. I guess even a non-Filipino squirrel can get a little nut every now and then! :p

aren't squirrels suppose to steal someone else's nuts? :D :D :D j/k ! if you said it only took 15 mins, my guess is Keith put some 6-pack early in the match ! anyhow, I would love some of those nuts ! :D :D :D

[edit]
??
If the player getting the "6 ball" racks the ball so his own spot is gone, I'm not sure he should be gambling. Conversely, if the person giving the spot is going to lose on the break, he wouldn't rack the spot to go in on the break.

Besides, when giving up the nuts, most players try to stipulate that only the 9 on the break is a winner. Thus, the 6 on the break would simply spot up.
