Ordered New Steve Lomax Cue Today!

Went out to his shop to meet Steve Lomax and place an order for a new player today. Received a tour of the shop. Was presented with many, many options for my new player, from exotic woods to rare versions of common woods, and even several ring options. I was given choices for every aspect of the cue, including shaft.

I Got to see several cues in various stages of being made. I have to say, I was impressed. Steve is a very down to earth, likable guy who took a long time out of his busy day to discuss cues with me and explain some of the intricacies of the various woods and other materials used in making cues. I was particularly impressed with his ring work. His shop was much larger than I had expected. Areas are set up for every stage, with attention focused on making sure the cues are properly handled every step of the way, from seasoning, to controlling room moisture levels throughout the shop and so on and so on. It was just a fantastic trip.

I would really like to thank Steve Lomax for his time and I am already anxiously anticipating my new player. If you're looking for a well made custom cue and willing to make a trip to the Atlanta area, I highly recommend you set up and pay a visit to Steve Lomax at his shop. You won't be disappointed.

(PS: Steve is scheduled to be at the NAPA Nationals in early June if you plan on attending.)

What did he quote you for an estimated lead time out of curiosity? A buddy of mine was maybe going to ask him about making a cue.

Ken, does he have any cue design program or something to help with design work for cues? My buddy is still looking around and might need help with this. He has ideas, but nothing concrete yet. (jet black ebony butt, turquoise and ivory or micarta inlays, possibly different wood/points/inlays in the forearm)
 
Steve also supports streaming with ads and can be found in the chats of those streams. Kudos to him. If I get the money for a higher end break/jump cue it will be a Lomax.

I have never worked with Steve. I think he did put tips on a couple of my cues at the Derby over the years.

I really don't have any idea what he has, but most cue makers do not have anything like that. My best suggestion is to sketch up a few things and if you are close take it to the cue maker and let him review and advise, as they can tell you minor things to add or change that will make their lives easier (cheaper too). The thing I liked about commissioning a cue is this design collaboration. TOGETHER, we always came up with a new idea(s).

Some folks just tell the cue maker to make me $2000 cue and then leave it entirely up to the cue maker. I was never that brave! :p

I have drawn them up in AutoCAD, but actually drawing a few sketches is within everyone's reach.

I ordered a cocobolo J/B from Steve in December. He said it would be ready in March and I could pick it up at the SBE. I sent him a 50% down payment and that was that.

He called about a week before the show to nail down some details.

On Thursday, as soon as the doors opened I went to his booth, he pulled the cue from his drawer. The work was 1st class, the wood was exquisite.

It was great to deal with a man who was true to his word and a master at his craft.

This is the norm, not the exception with Steve. Great cuemaker, great guy.

You won't be disapointed sir! Steve made me one last year that I love dearly! Great cuemaker and good guy as well. It was great to see Steve and Joe at the tradeshow this month. Just plain good people! Enjoy your new cue when you get it!
 
My buddy sent him a PM with an idea or two to get started. If he gets a cue made I'll make sure to get pictures for the gallery :)
 
Steve had a matched set of cues (player, breaker and jump) at the expo and they were very nice. Workmanship was top notch.

Depends on what stock you choose. From what I chose and options I went with, he estimated 4-6 weeks.
 
Nullus , I appreciate ya man

You helped me realize something I already knew . I was about to be all tore up about my finances and having to sell some stuff .The reality is I am in my first two years in a new business and it is really a roller coaster ride . If it was not for my wife ,I would starve sometimes. It's slowly coming around though and I think I will be able to hold on to my Lomax stuff. You are right Steve has an awesome set up and a wealth of knowledge on cues as well as pool .I'm trying to follow the rule that if an item is not being used or useful or is treasured , get rid of it . I have a ton of comic booksand a few antiques that fall into that category and a few other items to throw on the auction block ,but as of right now I'm keeping my Lomax cues .Steve is a good friend and has made me a couple really nice cues that I treasure because of the craftsmanship but more so because of our friendship. Steve , if you read this keep your ears on ,I will call you next week , I am working on that stereo for the shop and hope we can figure out how to hook it all back up right.
