I decided to order a new custom. After much considering I decided to go with Jerry Rauenzhan. I spent months pondering on the design I wanted, and I kept coming back to a plain ebony 4 point-no veneer cue. I just love the mean simple look of it.
Any whoo, I thought it be nice to share the process with you guys. I spoke to Jerry last week on the 28th of Feb and sent him the detail Dwg on the 2nd of March along with a half payment. I was very specific of the details I wanted and he said no problem.
Here's the spec sheet I sent him. I'll post updates as I get them.
Now, i just need to break the news to my Wife.

I think it is a super classy cue, and will make a great player. I live about 40 min. from Jerry, and I have always liked his cues. He is very old school, and very true to his art. He builds almost every single part himself. I will probably have to shoot against him in two weeks at our VNEA state championships. He also knows how to use the instruments he makes. I will be looking forward to watching your cue progress. Please keep us updated, and thanks for sharing!

Really nice design and I would also play with those specs. Jerry's a great guy to build it for you. I had one similar but from another maker and it got grabbed up by my only other pool playing relative. He kept saying how that design reminded him of his old days in playing with early Balabushka's and other great builders' cues from the 60's thru the 70's. It ended up making a really nice birthday present for him. There really is an understated elegance to this design and I think this is a nice reward for all the work you put into your new room. Enjoy it when it shows as I'm sure it'll be a real player!

LOL...Do you really think this is going to be a surprise to your wife that you would want a custom cue built after all the custom work you put into that beautiful pool room? Good luck in passing that info along to your wife but I'm sure this won't be a big shock.

Have a good one! and Thanks for sharing! I love these progressively developing threads!

Nope. I don’t look at it as taking away their style: I look at it as, getting a cue with a specific style I’m paying for.
I love the old-school cues. Zsamboti & Balabushkas. If a cue-maker feels making a plain old-school-cue takes away from their identifying traits, they can say no.
All I can say is, I’m not about to drop close to a $Grand$ and not be specific.
Thanks for the question.

Nice, I've wanted to see an -R- cue, they always look great.

One thing, tho, do you feel like giving every dimension on your cue takes away from the builder putting his own style into the cue? Don't get me wrong, I understand about the butt diameter, shaft diameter and weight, but when it comes to things like buttcap length, I think that you are treading on things that many cuemakers use as identifying traits on their cues.

But that may be just me.

That's a good point. Besides Jerry just doesn't have one style of cue he builds, cuz he builds everything from half splice to full splice cues in the old school butt cap style to hoppe and sneaky pete cues. Which no matter what they look like they all have his identifying trait; Quality

Looking forward to seeing updates.

I had Jerry make two cues for me, both my design, and the experience was great.
