What most people fail to understand when it comes to GCs...is their equity. I'll give you an example, take a 1955 Corvette. You find you have a choice of 2 for sale, 1 was in use by a traveling salesman up until 1980 who didn't do anything to restore the car throughout all the years he's owned it, and the 2nd one is in a garage at an older ladies home and hasn't been driven since her husband joined the Army in 1957. Due to his duty stations he didn't take his car with him and he ended up in Vietnam in 1965 where he was killed unfortunately, so he only had a chance to drive his pride and joy 1500 miles, but made sure he stored his car on blocks, and mothballed for long time storage according to Chevrolet. But his wife just didn't have the heart to sell his car throughout the years, but now she's sick and her grandkids are taking care of her....and are moving her into one of their homes to take care of her....and in that process, selling off everything she don't need to help raise some money and lighten her life up a little.

Here's how the public judges the sale price....2 55 vets for sale, 1 is for $1600 the other $50,000. Public thinks the $1600 vet is wore out and in need of a lot of investment, but it's affordable, the second one can't be original at $50,000...it must be a restored 55 vet....therefore not worth the $50,000....because it's not original....because when the interested parties in buying the vet call to get some information on it....no one knows anything about the car....all they say is its for sale for $50,000....so they pass on the sale by telling themselves it's not worth that much anyway....good luck selling it.

Sorry Glen, that's a fail! You better stick to pool tables because you don't have a clue about classic cars. I've owned about 50 or 60 of them over the years so I guess I have a little experience buying and selling them. Please God let me find a 1955 'Vette with only 1500 miles on it, jacked up in some barn somewhere. They got my 50K!

As for the other worn out old 1955 'Vette for $1,600, I want that one too!

That was an example Jay....LOL. although, that very situation happened to my first wife's uncle living in Montana. In 1983 I got out of the army, went on vacation to see my wife's family in Montana. Went with my wife's uncle to check out a 1953 Chevy for sale, owner was a 1st lieutenant in the army, killed in 65'....car sat in the garage from then until my uncle opened the garage door, looked in...couldn't give the lady the $600 fast enough....I looked in the garage and then say the 53' steel body corvette convertible, when in and looked at the mileage.....all 2300 miles was on the speedometer.....my first that was the police just have to be on their way because my wife's uncle was literally stealing this car:thumbup:

A little different in 1983, but still a $5-10,000 car back then. Rare classics have gone through the roof in the last few years at the big auctions (Barrett-Jackson, Mecum, Krause). I saw a 1965 twenty one window VW bus in pristine (total restoration) condition go for 200K and an original Shelby Cobra can bring a Mil! A cherry '55 Vette will bring a healthy six figures as well.

Last year I sold a stock 1963 Mercury Comet SR22 that brought 15K. It's the sports model Comet with bucket seats, stiffer suspension and the small block V8. Went straight to Japan on the next boat! :) Nothing really "classic" about that car. It was just in very good condition for it's age, a California car.
