other hobbies?

Sort of funny that this subject came up this very weekend. I made a promise to myself this weekend to get back to the piano. I left pool take over my spare time to the point that I think it has been almost two years since I've sat down at my piano. Late last summer I went to a family reunion and my one cousin married a guy in a band. He brought the band with him and the keyboard player had a nice electric piano. Everyone expected me to play. I sat down and made it through a couple of songs that I knew I could do, but that was it and I didn't play those few very well. So I think pool is going to take a back seat for a while.

This DOES NOT get you out of your bet...that is unless you've made a strong commitment to piano and would just like to pay up now. Then you're off the hook for even playing.... :D

Besides pool, I do some weight lifting, walking, watching all the interesting movies and listen to good music. I'm not really creative, but I like to cook to myself and for my friends and of course enjoy a good beer ! Travelling is something I'd like to do more if my wallet was thicker, duh.

Sometimes I just like to eat, drink and smell really bad :p

Correct, I didn't say I was giving up pool. I'm sure VAP and I will cross paths at a PP event before to long.

My main hobby other than pool is hacking around in my garage/shop. It is slowly becoming a machine shop, should be nearly complete by the time I retire in 15-20 more years. Latest aquisition - a 1942 Rhodes 7" (metal) shaper, 300 pounds of beautiful cast iron. I also cast aluminum and want to work up to brass. Although I am an electrical Engineer, I really shoulda been a mechanical as I enjoy inventing and building machines and mechanisms. Other than that I play a bit of golf, do some gardening, and read (history of scientific/industrial achievements being a favorite topic, other than pool).

I'm attending a LAN party in 2 weeks with 25+ people already signed up.

My flatmate has LAN parties, but he also does gaming through 50 States Hosting ... he and his buddies all use them as their server to game with a bunch of guys in Brazil. Let me know if you try it out.

Yet another contradiction in the short history of Marissa's missives. :p

I moved here from Europe... some things are hard to shake. Besides, why do people say "roommate" when you aren't sharing a room??

Whoa! I thought you moved from the New England area, thus you play the violin not the fiddle.

That was before she invented the internet and founded Key West. :p

Moved to Georgia in early 90s. Lived in Massachusetts from November 1999 to November 2001... Never said I played the fiddle. I play classical violin... Why... Does that turn you on?

Would like to learn to fish though because my 9 yr old has an interest in it. I have a large pond (25 acres) in front of my house and Lake Ontario in back. I took my son out 20 times last yr. and caught nothing.

I fish a lot and, to be truthful, rarely get skunked. Reminds me of when I was at a launch station on the Trent-Severn waterway where I sometimes fish and saw a couple of young Asian guys fishing. I said,
"Catching anything?"

"No, we never seem to catch anything..."

"What are you're using for bait?"

"Worms..." said one.

Now that struck me as odd because even my 5 year old nephew can catch fish with worms, so I asked to see how he had his line rigged. On a 25 lb test monofilament line, he had... a bobber the size of a baseball... a 100lb swivel.... a 6" flasher intended for lake trolling... then another 100lb swivel...then a huge in-line northern spinner... and finally a little worm on the big treble hooks of the spinner.

I tried not to laugh but mentioned that the spinner needed to be retrieved through the water to work properly. I stripped his reel and put some 6lb test, a small bobber, a couple of split shot, and an Eagle Claw hook with his worm. First cast he caught a rock-bass. Second cast he caught a 2-3 lb smallie and nearly fell in the river he was so excited...

"This is easy..." he crowed.

"Yep." I said. "Nothing to it..." And there isn't - anybody can fish with worms and catch fish.

WHAAAAT?? You're spending all of that time out in your garage and you're NOT making cues? What a shame!!! Some of he greatest cuemakers in the country are making their cues out of a garage.
Get with the damn program man...get some lathes in there asap!!

I have a lathe, unfortunately there is little demand for a 12" cue :( (I know, get a bigger lathe). My last project was a retrofit jig for a shaft cutting table I built years back (cuts 12 shafts at once). The original had a fixed stop configured for cutting 1/2" increments. Now my buddy is getting Rifle shaft blanks (much cheaper than getting them tip-trimmed from the factory) and the new jig can be set for cutting any increment from 0 to 3/4" allowing him to adjust the flex as needed. I should sell you one :)

I love classical. A motorcycle accident breaking most bones in my right wrist was the incident that moved me from classical piano to more contemporary music. My right wrist is almost immobile. The feeling from your heart in your music is transferred to the keyboard by your wrist. I would imagine it is with the violin also. Tried for a while but classical was just to complex to accomplish without a right wrist.

Sounds like a good idea...I've always preferred the blanks myself to be able to dial them it for "tweeners". And yes...they are less costly. I don't need one more thing added to my collection for moving purposes though. I need to get RID of crap. :(
