Out Of Position Here

ok, your opponent has left you with this layout, with five balls left on the table. the shot on the '5' Ball doesnt lay well, as the angle takes you away from the '6' Ball.

what do you do here?
pocket the '5', follow up, and bank the '6' into the side? or do you draw back and hope you can make a very difficult shot on the '6' Ball into the corner?

the power draw around the table really isnt there because of the very slight angle on the '5' Ball. if i tried that i would draw the rock back into the corner pocket. plus the '8' Ball could come into play on that shot as well.

I would think this route is best. Hit the bank to miss wide and not too hard on the 6 so that if you miss, your opponent will not have an easy shot. Even if you miss short on the bank, there's nothing easy about getting out.

follow it and shoot it in the bottom left corner

I agree with Egg and briandlau. Hit it firm with high right. A decent stroke should make this position natural. If you're short, it's just a tougher shot on the 6 in the same pocket, and if you're long, you've always got that bank shot NotYou suggested.

It looks like if you hit it firm with a little outside, you can come one rail to the short side. It makes it harder to pick up a perfect angle on the 6 because you're coming into your position zone on a perpendicular line, but it might be a viable option for some.

Good luck!

What about trying to get to the other side of the 6, leaving a short draw shot to the 7. For the short draw shot, please refer to http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=37160 :)

There are several ways to deal with this without having to bank the 6 ball. Your first instinct was to follow the ball - good luck trying to not hit the 7 ball once you let go of the cue ball. I would draw the cue ball as diagrammed, and with the lay of the table, just don't power draw it.

In the diagram I have provided, you can slide draw it back along the line to either points A or B. Its up to you. You can also change it up a little bit and snip it along the blue line. Of course you are accepting a tougher shot on the 6, but at least you have a shot. If you try to do too much with the position here, I guarantee you that your chances of missing that 5 ball will increase 60-70%. The shots in my diagram shed light upon the importance of drills that are designed to enhance and develop your precision.

Personally, I like the forward roll to the side pocket bank. If you're missing that bank shot, you really need to work on your banking skills.
