I just learned today that this month's Billiards Digest has an "Untold Stories" article by R. A. "Jake" Dyer about my upcoming pool history book called The Oklahoma Roots of One Pocket. This is the September 2023 issue with David Alcaide on the cover.

I haven't read the entire article myself yet, but I know Jake asked some questions about my own experience as a player when we did the interview by phone.

If anyone is interested in learning more about the creation of One Pocket, there are links to a free extract on OnePocket.org and to pre-order the book for Amazon Kindle in my signature below. The book is scheduled for release on September 30th in both eBook and paperback.

My son had a local newspaper do a story on him when he was doing junior nationals trips. They had a local sports article they did and I sent them an email about it, they ended up featuring him for the week. Quite a few of the juniors get mention in their town or state area, some even get TV time if their PR is good enough hehe.

I got a small mention in an article by JD, in a now defunct national men's magazine, in a story about the US One Pocket Open,

Funny thing: I'm in a joint getting my hair cut and the owner comes up to me and asks, are you the same guy I just read about in a magazine in pool story?! Made me a celeb there.

When you said "men's magazine," my first thought was if you meant the kind that everybody claims to read for the articles. ;)

Looked at the piece that mentioned you and found it interesting that Tom Wirth was the underdog who went for $25 in the Calcutta and beat Cliff Joyner in that tournament. Imagine that was before his book came out.

I don't remember the exact date or issue (it was over 25 years ago), so I have no links, but I was in Entrepreneur Magazine, believe it or not. I also did a spot on The X Show (FX version of The Man Show). It aired nationally.

How many got their name in the paper for the wrong reason?
Funny, but there's some truth to this. When doing historical research, I always keep in mind that a person's good deeds aren't mentioned in the newspaper (or court records) as often as their worst moments. It's a kind of negative bias built into the historical records that are available.

This actually came up when doing the research for my book on One Pocket. For all the years that Hayden Lingo was on the road, the only newspaper trail he left behind were arrests for gambling in Texas and vagrancy in Connecticut. Those two charges were the scourge of any hustler. McGoorty talked about this some in the book with Robert Byrne.

There is a one pocket player who recently passed away that served time for robbery in Houston. I often saw him at Cornbreads in Houston. He was soft spoken and polite. One evening I’m watching the 6:00 news and his mug shot appears and the story of being charged for robbing women in affluent neighbourhoods for money and jewellery in their driveways. You just never know.

I remember the first time I walked into Bananas in San Antonio. Duffy walked up to me while I was sitting on the rail and we talked about our background. Duffy brought Vivian Villarreal along when she was a youngster. One thing I will always remember is how he described degenerate road players. They own a cue stick, pinky ring and drive a used car any any or all three of their possessions are likely to end up in a pawnshop at one time or another. Damon Runyon characters for sure.

I have got many articles about me playing pool. When I competed in the Nordic 10-ball Championship last month, 2 newspapers had a few stories and a radiostation had 3 different mentions about my participation.

I am a member of the Norwegian Parliament, and now I will probably get coverage every time I play an event. But I used to get results in my local newspaper every now and then before I became a MP too, for example when I as a teenager played for 42 hours with no break

Some coverage

Someone at my local hall was talking about a player they knew that was amazing because he was on some ESPN match. I replied "you can simply run out naked during a baseball game and end up featured on ESPN" LOL, it's not an immediate sign of skill.
