Ah, the price of celebrity. There was supposed to be a picture of me from a One Pocket tournament in the Billiards Digest piece that wound up not getting published. Probably just as well. Don't want to knock my own action ... such as it is.I did, and it got me kicked out of a few local bar tournaments.
When you said "men's magazine," my first thought was if you meant the kind that everybody claims to read for the articles.I got a small mention in an article by JD, in a now defunct national men's magazine, in a story about the US One Pocket Open,
Funny thing: I'm in a joint getting my hair cut and the owner comes up to me and asks, are you the same guy I just read about in a magazine in pool story?! Made me a celeb there.

Funny, but there's some truth to this. When doing historical research, I always keep in mind that a person's good deeds aren't mentioned in the newspaper (or court records) as often as their worst moments. It's a kind of negative bias built into the historical records that are available. How many got their name in the paper for the wrong reason?
Freddie, that was a fantastic and informative interview you did. Thanks for sharing the link.I was in my local newspaper in 1993 when the growing national league called the APA was gaining steam. I was one of three APA 8-ball SL-7s in one of the longest runming APA areas at the time.
AZB’s Buzz Magazine did an article on me a few years ago.

There is a one pocket player who recently passed away that served time for robbery in Houston. I often saw him at Cornbreads in Houston. He was soft spoken and polite. One evening I’m watching the 6:00 news and his mug shot appears and the story of being charged for robbing women in affluent neighbourhoods for money and jewellery in their driveways. You just never know.Funny, but there's some truth to this. This actually came up when doing the research for my book on One Pocket. For all the years that Hayden Lingo was on the road, the only newspaper trail he left behind were arrests for gambling in Texas and vagrancy in Connecticut. Those two charges were the scourge of any hustler. McGoorty talked about this some in the book with Robert Byrne.
I remember the first time I walked into Bananas in San Antonio. Duffy walked up to me while I was sitting on the rail and we talked about our background. Duffy brought Vivian Villarreal along when she was a youngster. One thing I will always remember is how he described degenerate road players. They own a cue stick, pinky ring and drive a used car any any or all three of their possessions are likely to end up in a pawnshop at one time or another. Damon Runyon characters for sure.Funny, but there's some truth to this.
