There have been posts on underrated pool cue builders. I'm wondering who people think are overrated.

I don't think that would be a good topic to bring up.Not trying to be ugly or anything.;)

No offense, but while I am certain you do not intend it this thread will come to no good along with a great deal of drama. If some choose to give their opinion that is all you will have is an opinion and nothing more. I just do not understand why people love to attack or insult some one who is trying to learn a very difficult skill.

I think the only way that some one can honestly answer your question with no bias attached to their answer is to comment upon themselves. So I will say this about myself I build cues, mostly conversions, however, I do also build cues without points since I have not perfected the technique yet. I do not consider myself under rated or over rated, I choose to say that at this point in time I am not good enough to have a rating!!!!:)

Always one of my favorite topics! No one wants to admit that there are cuemakers whose reputation is undeserved. Ne it a matter of personal opinion or empirical fact. After finally getting to hit balls with a couple southwest cues, I'm gonna have to say they are overrated. Of course that is not an attack on Laurie or jerry. But I am also of the opinion that any for over 1000$ is overrated.

It's funny because I find that many people disagree on what is good and what is not but you seldom hear of anyone slamming a cuemakers product.

There are at least 5 or 6 that I would say that I was highly disappointed with but I certainly wouldn't want to mention them. I wouldn't want a forum where people publicly criticized what I did for a living.

I'll buck the trend here..I had a cue from a well-known company that has a W in tits name and it was a total POS.

I got a cue from a cuemaker that had/has a very good reputation from what I can tell, and it had extremely significant aesthetic flaws. It also wasn't to my specifications.

I definitely won't consider another cue without seeing it in very high detail (either high-res pics or in-person).

I've also been learning a lot about design theft lately, and SEVERAL cuemakers I previously considered excellent craftsmen are now on my never-buy-from list.

Just a thought, but posting an unbiased review of an inferior product only serves to enhance the quality of cues brought to market and serves us as consumers better.

These reviews needn't be malicious or anything like that. However reading pros and cons about various cue makers is a good thing, imo.

Cheers...

I do not think this argument would go any where except maybe South, but the Rating or Performance of a Single Cue, or Cuemaker is up to the person on the day they are playing with said Cue.

I would think it would be like discussing the BEST Chinese Food in Los Angeles, it come down to individual likes and dislikes of the person who is make the judgement, comment or expressing their individual opinion.

Someone might say:

I believe that you can have at least some sort of objective criteria by which you can measure cues. A "Consumer Reports" for cues, if you will. Hell, at least a measure to gauge customer satisfaction, however you measure it, would be good, imo.

Playability or Hit is IMHO not something you can judge on a SCALE or with a Meter.

Customer Service, or Customer satisfaction is!

Eddy Wheat will only get Black Mark in Customer Service.:(

True, playability is hard to measure. But so are element of tonality and sound quality with speakers, but Consumer Reports measures them anyway, to good effect, imo.

Good place to start is probably consumer satisfaction though.

Chris you are certainly entitled to you opinion, but when we make these statements we have to remember that all they are is opinions. That is why a thread like this really go's no where and no imperial information is really gathered.

So like I said above these threads in my opinion can not serve a valid purpose when opinions are all that can offered, you know what they say opinions are like butt holes everybody got one.:D

Take care Chris, oh and just in my opinion!!:):)

I have to agree with Manwon. Nothing good can come from a post like this. Does GM produce a lemon every now and then? Posche? IBM? Apple? Do you think every Fender guitar was perfect? Stradivarius violin? Humans are inherently flawed and make mistakes. Pointing out that someone's efforts are lacking or over rated is never positive. Would anyone like to see a poll at their work regarding whether they are over rated? I've held a lot of very high end cues in my hands from some giants in the industry and seen some unbelievably beautiful efforts and also some major disappointing flaws. I have seen people post pics on this site of their "MONSTER" cues with 40,50,60 posters telling them how awesome it is yet there are flaws right there in the pic for the discernable eye to pic up. Truth is having picked up building as a hobby I know how extremely difficult attempting perfection with inherently imperfect materials is to achieve. Would I ever use wood filler as I've seen? Magic marker to even points? Sell a cue with router marks still visible under the clear? Accept gaps in my veneers?inlays? I have seen all of these from very reputable makers. The answer to all of these questions for me is no but I will never judge others nor participate in calling someone else's efforts over rated as at the end of the day I do not earn a living at this and I do not have to meet difficult deadlines, creating impossible designs with impatient demanding pool players breathing down my neck everyday calling and saying when will I get my cue. Big Rep to Manwan for pointing out the slippery slope you are setting out on. Why not do an under rated cue makers post instead? There are lots of those or a who's work is the cleanest? For that I would pic Randy Mobley. I have never seen a cue of his that is not absolutely perfect in it's execution. Anyway that's my rant over and my humble opinion stated.

dan trogdan from parkerburg wv... he makes shafts that hit just like a predator..... sum of his cues r really really fancy sum not,...... work is fast an done right
