Owen Deserving of Mosconi Cup Spot?

The big events of the pool year are now behind us and we can now start thinking ahead to the 2004 Mosconi Cup in December.

Bollman, Wiseman, Robles and Strickland all managed top ten finishes in the US Open, but only two Americans really made a big splash at the 2004 US Open. That would be Corey Deuel and, of course, the champion Gabe Owen.

Who, then, are the six players most deserving of being on the 2004 Mosconi Cup team for the US?

Here are my six:

Johnny Archer: because he’s the very best American nine ball player today
Rodney Morris: member of last year’s Mosconi cup team, has had a solid year
Jeremy Jones: playing extremely well of late, solid as a rock
Tony Robles: member of last year's Mosconi Cup team, won BCA Open, 9th in US Open
Gabe Owen: because he is the US Open Champion
Corey Deuel: at his best when stakes are high, won DCC and Predator ring games, 4th in US Open

Though both were members of the 2003 Mosconi Cup team, Charlie Williams sand Earl Strickland didn’t make my cut this year. Let’s hope Europe does us a favor again by leaving third-place US Open finisher Feijen off their 2004 team, as they did last year.

I look forward to hearing the thoughts of others on who deserves to be on the 2004 US Mosconi Cup team.

My understanding is that the top four players from the UPA points list are definitely invited. That would be Robles, Williams, Archer and Morris. You know that Earl will be invited. That only leaves one spot.

Unfortunately still sounds like politics. I think the team mentioned above is by far second to none.

I would leave Williams off the list and put in Gabe Owens. How can you win the US open and not be on the Mosconi Cup team? Leave it to Charlie Willams, thats how! However, we will see when the time comes, maybe the UPA will make better decisions.

Strickland should not be included on the Mosconi Cup team. He made an ass out of himself last year with his sharking and antics with the crowd. He is an embarrassment on an international team representing the U.S.

Just my .02.

You are right about Earl. However, Stickland+Matchroom=$$$$$$$$$. The Euro fans love to hate on this guy.

Earl will definitely be on the US Mosconi Cup team, he fills the stands and brings in the good TV ratings. Owen will definitely be considered now that he won the US Open. A friend of Oliver Ortmann asked Ortmann and they have already decided team Europe:

Ortmann (captain)
Davis
Feijen
Engert
Immonen
Chamat
Drago

This was posted on another forum so I can't say it's 100%...I don't work for matchroom sport lol! Interesting selections.

The above list mentions seven players but there are only six players per side. Teams will be announced on Wednesday 22nd September.

Thanks for clearing that up Luke, I thought there were seven players including a non-playing captain  Anyways it will be interesting to see just who the teams consist of, can't wait for the 22nd or for December to come, any info on the WPL yet?

elementary

we have this new thing ... called a phone.

already asked upa what the deal was. upa gets top four ranked players, matchroom gets two wild cards. no doubt earl the "pearl" and u.s. open winner will be picked.

see how simple that was?

Sniper, there are seven players including a non-playing captain. Last year:

US Team: Varner (NP Capt), Jones, Archer, Morris, Robles, Williams, Strickland
Europe: Ortmann (NP Capt), Hohmann, Immonen, VanDenBerg, Davis, Chamat, Souquet,

Unless Luke is saying that the format has been changed, that is.

Correct. There are no non-playing captains this year. Each team will select their own captain in advance of the event.

No non playing captains.....
You mean I am going to miss that little nick Varner shouting USA, USA, USA!!

And that means that Ollie can play! My guess is that he will be the playing captain!!

@Luke: Nice to see you here and nice to see that the selection for the Mosconi cup is a big deal to all pool lovers!

hello berry, hey luke. ;)
so if there'll only be six players, who's not playing for the europe team?
oh yeah...september 22...can't wait to know the final players for both teams!!!

Thanks for the info, Luke. I'm sure the 2004 Mosconi Cup will be a great event, just like all other Matchroom productions!

I was wondering if possibly they take an alternate player along who can step in if someone gets sick or something and that is the reason for seven selections. Also I was wondering if the (non playing) captain could fill the void in the above circumstances?

The involvement of non-playing captains last year was a bit of an experiment which we are not repeating in 2004. No one has been sick yet in the ten years of the event but if it were to happen then I'm sure we would find a way around it.

Well then Luke I would like to cast a vote for the US Open Winner to have a spot. I would also like to cast a vote to have Earl removed but I know that you guys like to see him get fired up and he is polarizing to say the least.

In that case, it was really nice to read on AZB today that Owen has been selected. Europe's team looks very tough and we'll need to play very well to win the 2004 Mosconi Cup.
