Owners of a Murnak, Justis, or Whitten Cue Case

Murnak Cue Case

I had the pleasure of spending part of the day with Jim Murnak at his studio in Brooklyn. What I found was a true gentleman, a pool player, craftsman, and artist who is totally in touch with his clientele. His cases might be a bit heavier but look what you get - thick, durable, gorgeously dyed, designs and carvings that are amazing, and a configuration that is tailored to our needs and desires, whether it be a jump cue pocket or a remote control to open or close the zippers - this is the case for me. I love the Justis's and Whitten's but the Murnak will be with me when I reach 150 years of age, and I only have another 50 to go.

Well said Steve.

Jim <------(your name is Steve isn't it???)

My mother used to print my name in the collars of all my shirts when I went to camp. She's passed away now, but I looked in the collar of my t-shirt anyway. Come to find out, my name is 'Fruit Of The Loom'.....

Arn't we all "fruit of the womb"?:)

I wish I had bought the introductory Murnak. ...... I like the design- I would probably opt for a single strap though.

Both straps are removable so it's not a problem, but I'm pretty sure Jim would build one for you without the second strap. They're a nice idea, though, for larger designs like 3x6. A fully loaded 3x6 is still probably lighter than my kid backpacked to school in junior high.

Good post Fred, give me 10 minutes with anything and I'll find things wrong with it.
I'll go about the case thread a different way, I'll list what I like and it differs greatly by size.

for a 1x2 I don't think you can beat the Whitten, size and weight as well as the way it fits in your hand, very sleek and streamlined.

2x4 I just love the Justis, you can't beat the look of class and the unique style, you get something that stands out and heads turn when you walk in the room.

Big case 3x7 I love the Instroke, the protection it offers is great the features are great (pockets, jump handle pouch) But the construction is a bit off (latches, lower grade of leather)

As far as cases I don't care for, Giuseppe (?) they are made of cardboard, very crappy, Porper are a step up but still import quality. Any no-name import I wouldn't use the tubes suck and they fall apart.

Other cases like Murnak, Swift, NYC all have some nice features and workmanship, but IMO are a bit heavier and for lack of a better word Clunky, But sometimes the trade off may be worth the lower prices

Other cases like It's George, Flowers and Felini are nice, but try to find them in good shape for a good price.

Jim

For a 1/2 the Whitten cases are hard to beat. Plus it does not even look like a cue case- I could carry it to my office and people had no idea what it was. I loved the one I had. I have also thought a 2/4 with no pockets and just a handle would be a cool case. Impractical but really cool looking.

I have an instroke geo and it is crappy. Unfortunately, it is like a knockoff of its ancestors. Mine has frayed leather and a broken lid handle. Some parts of the leather look great, but the strap has stitching that is frayed. Designwise it is great. A little tight on the pockets but the jump handle is really well thought out. I would not buy the geo line again.

Porpers are workhorses- I carry a 4/8 sometimes with just 2 cues. I can get a lot into the pockets and I never have to worry about the case.

Cases

I got the 4x8 Murnak and love the way it looks and have plenty of room for cues. It has a pocket for a jump cue butt and a pocket for a cue extension. I am very satisfied with it. You can see it in my avitar.

Wish it could hold a rack of balls and 2 six packs of beer, but Christmas is just around the corner.:D

I have had both whitten and justis cases before. Currently I am using the Whitten. My only issue with these cases is the weight. Also as the previous posters have said Justis cases take a beating better than whitten. I think the older and more used justis cases get they look better.

We all seem to be an ad for the case we like the most. Every case out there is a trade-off in some respect. I like my new Murnak a lot. The leather is tough, thick, and durable...I will pass it on to one of my sons I am sure, as it will certainly outlast me. It is what I was looking for in a case, which may not be what anyone else was looking for.

Other cases that I have owned...Its George, Justis, Whitten, Instroke, Bently, Felini, Swift, Kelly case, Florida Fred, Brunswick, and a bunch of the others. I have had every size from 1x1 to 12x24 to 40x40. I have bought and sold many, many cases. Several of the cases were very good and all served their purpose, some better than others. Depending on what your need is and what your personal preferences are, one will be better than another for you. I chose the Murnak after doing some studying and inquiring of other owners, and after talking with Jim Murnak.

The Murnak was the case that I wanted made and the way I wanted it made. It does not have to appeal to or satisfy anyone but me.

All three offer good protection, but I honestly think Instroke (which isn't on your list) offers the best protection of all.

I think so too. I have a couple of Premiers and the Predator case, which is made by instroke, and looking at their tube/lining construction (esp on the predator case) it's evident that they built the case with protection as their first priority. The instroke Premier is the best value in cases out there, imo.

Just got my 2x4 Murnak delivered yesterday. Love it in aspects of construction, appearence, and functiuonality. But a couple of things I want to mention,

1. Tubes that hold the butt of the cue are a little oversized.
2. The tube lining - although very strong and durable, its not the softest of linings.
3. Lighter than a Whitten 2x4

I'm a big Murnak fan. For the money you get a gorgeous case andwell thought out for the player. The quality of leather will last you a lifetime and his prices are amazing for what you get. You won't be sorry.
