pads

For Ivory ferrules they are a must. But for a 'regular' ferrule I think it comes down to just preference. I personally love them have been using them for years. I use Triumph tips these days and nicely, them come pre-backed. I have a few pads I could send you if you want to try them out -no charge. They are trim to fit when you're installing with a new tip. Players go through all kinds of gear to find what kinda combo they like.. this is just another step. Fortunately, it's an inexpensive step. =o]

always use a pad on ivory ferrules and on thinwall ferrules like Meucci uses. personally, I like to use the red or blue ones since they show up and cause comments (& bring in other customers :p )

Just One Man's Opinion.............d

i have used ivory ferrules with no pad and a layered tip with no pad.if i get one with a pad under the tip first thing i do is cut it off.i have nevr had one crack, chip or break.ivory is alot tougher than most think.

If you use the search feature you will find that this has been discussed many many times.

This may be true, but here's my story: For the last 10 years I've been playing with a custom Gina with three ivory ferruled shafts. I cycle through playing with all three shafts and have them retipped once a year, usually at the DCC. This past year, the cue mechanic I usually go to asked if I still wanted pads, saying he didn't think they were necessary. Against my better judgement, I said, no pads. Now, I have two cracked ferrules and a ping in the third. So now I get to look for a mechanic I trust with Gina shafts, will get them back to me in short order, and spend $300.

So maybe you need pads on ivory ferrules and maybe you don't, but I know I will never fail to get them again :-)
