Just got this sad news from Phyllis Gumphrey. I'm sure some of you remember Steve's dad. I still miss Steve too.

Hi Bill,

Just wanted to let you know that Papa Gumphrey (Steve & Bobby's Dad) passed away yesterday afternoon at his home in Cumberland, MD.. I was there and Steve's 2 sisters were there along with his step-daughter who has been taking care of him for a while now.

I don't have any details yet except the funeral home is called The Adams Family funeral home in Cumberland and it is going to be this week. Possible Wednesday.

If you don't mind, I would greatly appreciate it if you could you post on A-Z and other sites you go to; that the Original "Gump" has passed and is now with his 2 sons. I am borrowing my son's computer briefly now as mine is in the shop. Otherwise I would go to those message boards myself.

I will have some pics of Steve soon too that I can put on my computer when I get it back.

Thanks so much.

Thank you very much, JAM. Just woke up and saw I could finally get on and didn't look for your post. My fault and thanks again.

Papa Gump and Steve

My condolences goes out to the "Papa Gump' family

The first time I ever met Steve Gumphrey's was in Hot Springs, Arkansas at a big table 9-Ball tournament at the Velda Rose Hotel, back in 1976, ( I was just 17yrs. old then )

There were all the "Big Guns" of the day in it, just to name a few ,
Buddy Hall, Louie Roberts, Steve Gumphrey, Steve Cook, Richie Ambrose, Rusty Brandymere , Mike Segal , Floyd Baxter and many others.

Don't remember who put on the tournament but half way through it , this person took all the Added money and players entry fee $ and skipped town with it, was a very sad thing to do, but all the remaining players that was still in decided to scrounge up a little $ for a small pot and finish the tournamment because there was such an audience for the the daily and evening matches.

Mike Segal eventually won, Steve Gumphrey finished in the top 5, man he sure was a smooth player, he was very young at that time, about 21 yrs......

......about 4 yrs. later Steve made his way down to Longview ,Texas where he became good friends with me and my brother "Country Calvin"

, we introduced him to this really "Cute" bartender at the local pool room, her name was "Peggy" and they soon married after that.

Steve Gumphrey died at an early age of cancer, he was in his early to mid-30's.

May Steve and his Papa rest in peace!
