Parting tool - any one tried these ?

We was looking at this setup at work and I was wondering if it was worth a
try on my own machine for cue work?
Has any one tried this with luck or not ?

Note there is not a direct screw to lock the insert so the whole thing is only hold
in place by the quick change tool holder...

It's cut from a Arno tool catalog and is stated to be a "grooving" tool..

I have one made by Iscar but only use it for stainless. High buck cutoff for wood. The hss ones work great for wood and phenolics.

Kent,

Cutoff tools are very good tools. I would always have one, no matter what I am doing.

Having said that, I have never used an insert based cutoff tool. Probably because of the price, and the fact that unless your parting off allot of hard metal parts, you just won't wear one out. I use one of High Speed Steel and just resharpen it when it gets a little dull. I have had it for years!

I have never had it come out of the holder. The pressure pushes it back into the holder.

I think I have the box. I bought the whole quick change new for a Hightower for $75.00 on Ebay. Parting attachment worked great.

I bought a whole set of quick change for the Porper and Metal Lathe for $125.00 from MSC. Parting tool worked great.

It locks them in and cuts great and change over is in seconds.

Thanks every one, sorry for late feedback.
Have been working like a whipped horse these days...

The plan with the parting tool is to use it for my metal work
(screws, inserts, weight bolts) and possibly for my "plastic" work.

If it was working for parting wood, that would have been a good bonus but I
get the feeling that this is not the optimum geometry for this work?

I was kind of worried about the fact that there is no "set screw" to hold the bit?
But I guess the pressure from the material would push the insert back in the
holder.... I'm not sure if there would be any side ways movement causing
vibration and a dodgy cut ???

The one at work did not fit the machine so the tool holder had to be grounded
down to be adjusted to the center line of the machine. So I have not tried
it yet on anything like our work. The smallest with of the insert is at I understand
it 2mm which I guess is kind of "fat" for ringwork. For this the plan was to
use live tooling including KJs saw blade setup.

The holder posted could be viewed at www.arno.de where you also can see
the gun drill with removable alu-inserts I posted about earlier.

Thanks
Kent J
