Hi I was curious if anyone here has purchased any of the books or DVD's for the Playing Ability Test (PAT). I know that there are 3 different levels. I am not sure which to get. The books or the DVD's. I know that Thorsten Hohmann in on the DVD's and he executes the drills for you to see. I am just worried that if I purchase the DVD it will be condenced and missing some material from the books. I am also not sure if the books just give you different drills and no input on to properly execute the drills. Any information to enlighten me would help make my decision easier. Thanks.

DJP,
I have the 3 PAT books; but I do not have the DVD's.

The books certainly are not only a tremendous tool for self-evaluation; they also can be used to develop your own customized program for improvement. Two thumbs up; definitely the most comprehensive evaluation program out there.

I recommend that players get all 3 books (a professional could skip PAT 1, but everyone else should work through all 3 books). JMO.

I have the first book. Haven't really got into it yet, but it looks very promising.

Modern Pool

You might also want to look into the book Modern Pool by Ralph Eckert. He's on the videos. He has most of the Pat shots in there and explanations for a lot of things.

Oops. I forgot to mention that the PAT books are translated from the German to English - unfortunately by someone who does NOT have English as their first language. Very difficult to follow (I'm not sure to this day that I'm administering the test properly....it's possible the DVD could help straighten out the multitude of ambiguities).

I have all 3 PAT books. I have yet to get any of the DVDs but they are harder to get and cost quite a bit.

The PAT books represent a great means of self-improvement and self-measurement of your skill sets. I have incorporated all 3 PAT books into my own personal training system that I created for myself this summer.

I normally test myself under PAT 1 about every 10 days, and test myself under PAT 2 & 3 once a month. The demands of PAT 2 & 3 are definitely higher thats for sure. But that's good. Measuring yourself at those higher standards gives you a truer understanding of where your skills sit.

It is true though that the translation work from German to English could have been better. When I started working under PAT 1 there were a couple of questions about how to interpret some of their instructions regarding 1 of the drills. But I have a PAT examiner, Robin Dreyer, who lives in my state and who on occasion makes it into my pool room to conduct group lessons for the local players. So having him as a resource helped in cleaning up some of the understanding of those translation issues.

I encourage everyone to invest in a complete set of the PAT books. The sooner that your really begin working the material, the faster that you will gain a truer understanding of where your skills are at and begin making serious improvement in your game skills.

I think the DVDs are only in German. I would like to see them in english. The books are worth getting imo. Keep something in mind, and this is clearly stated in the books, get someone who can coach you through the drills to tell you what you are doing wrong.

Betmore, I'm acquainted with the test and maybe could try to clarify some dark points if you still have 'em. (but I never ran a whole test myself, just some drills. But my friend is a certified PAT tester, so if I fail to help he will do that for sure :))

Has anyone tried the ebooks on this page? I thought about it, but the one computer restriction turned me off of it. Not so much one computer, but what happens if I reinstall Windows? The ebook cannot be used on MacOS.
