Pat Fleming....Ok????

Unless your age starts with a '5' or less you really have no place on a bicycle. Waaaaay too many bad, if not fatal, things can and do happen.
Disagree. I ride with quite a few people in their 60s and 70s. The risks of staying active are far less than not and cycling is really easy on your body compared to many things (especially running/walking).

Yeah, that’s the irony. But I know active people who have been seriously hurt on their bikes. I don’t know of any who were hurt bad on their stationary bike, elliptical etc…. I am getting older and need to be in better shape etc… but it won’t be from riding a bike on the road. The bad injuries don’t help you stay active. The same car that takes me to the pool hall can go to the gym. I should walk more too. That I will do. Pedestrians can get hit, but seems to me bikes are riskier.

The new e- bikes and scooters will keep the ER busy I think. I was walking one day and saw a weird scooter accident. No car involved and the lady wasn’t hurt bad, but she may get herself hurt riding it.

If you like riding bikes, it's not unheard of to drive your bike to a walking/biking trail if there's one somewhat nearby.

In the town near me they have a walking trail that's kept up better than many of the roads in it , at times you may see people walking on it and on occasion some dip stick driving a car down the walking trail ha ha but they normally only do that once ha ha .

I also need to work out and walk a lot more than I do .

yea rusty we dont want to lose you yet.

get those elastic band thingeys . this way they are right there and all you have to do is pick one up.
that keeps me in strength.

and as we get older the best exercise is the push. you take your hands and push straight away from the dinner table before the desert comes.

On occasion I enjoy going into the local thrift stores to see if I can find mainly old tools that I've never seen before ha ha
Anyway on one trip into town I found a box of the elastic band material that you cut go length and use that along with the round resistance bands .

To go along with a small assortment of dumbbells , I may graduate to kettle balls at some point ha ha

I've ridden my entire life and what most bikers know is that other drivers unconsciously don't see bikes. It's a heuristic thing. They expect to see another vehicle, not a bike or motorcycle, and in that 0.2 of a second, until it registers with them, all kinda bad shit can occur.
I've had people literally try to drive over me bcuz they didn't see me. After that, I switched to Harleys.
They might not See me, but can sure as hell Hear me.
Best wishes for a speedy Pat!!👍🏻
there's also the 'bike nazis' that think they own the fkng road. In Tulsa you see people on bikes almost playing chicken just 'cause they think their $5000 bicycle means something. Fk them, obey the traffic laws or go to the ER.

I got a set of those elastic bands around a decade ago when I did physical therapy.

They seem silly at first but just for keeping some tension on your body parts when moving them around really does strengthen and smoothly improve range of motion. I actually keep one in my pool bag and will mess around with them a bit if I'm in a long tournament.

Easy on your body til you get hit by a F-150 that never saw you.
That's why you choose your routes wisely. I generally recommend people ride gravel roads if they're accessible because there's always less traffic and generally the traffic is more considerate (at least in my experience). I'm more worried about drivers in the suburb i live in than i am in Minneapolis proper or out in the country. Rich suburbanites in their land yachts are THE WORST.

Rusty, I was really starting to feel my age (81 now) and my body was getting weaker. I exercised only intermittently, maybe only once a week with floor exercises. I did walk occasionally but not on a regular basis. Last month I decided that I really needed to do something or I was going to go downhill fast. I started walking a mile every morning and it was really hard the first few days just to make it home. My legs and hips were sore and I was very fatigued. After a week or so I began to do better. A month in I'm walking faster (a good steady pace) and doing that mile very easily, with little strain. It's become my morning habit to do that mile no matter what.

The best part is my overall health is a lot better. I've got more get up and go! I also do sets of lifts with 5 pound dumbells daily. That's about it. I'm in a Race to Hundred with the world so I've got to stay in stroke. Good luck buddy!

Congratulations Jay on you're commitment to your walking regiment ! When I had a hunting dog { I'm a sucker for black Labradors ha ha ) I'd take them for a walk in the evening as a start to the evening retrieving work out for the dog .
I lost my last lab to cancer nearly 3 years ago now and just don't have the heart to get another one yet .

If nothing else I just need to start fishing like I used to do before winter sets in .

During cancer treatments I'd drive to the mall or to one of the large chain stores grabs shopping cart and push it around until I was wore out then lean,on the cart until I caught my breath or felt better then start all over again .

I used to enjoy walking out on friends farms or ranches , I was scouting deer , antelope or coyotes that was enjoyable but now we've got grizzly bears and a few black bears around here still , I've got guns just no bear pepper spray ha ha

And yes grizzly breakfast sausage is a fine meal , don't worry a friend in Alaska gave it to me ha ha !

It’s been a while now, but I once played poker with a guy from Yaak MT. He was an old guy who looked good for his age. Mentally sharp, drank whiskey, looked strong, having a good time at the casino. He asked us to guess his age. I knew he was older than he looked. So guessed maybe 70. A healthy 70. Well, he was 85. Maybe the old coot is alive at over 100. I dunno. Anyway, he was asked his secret. He said walk 5 miles a day. Every day. I assume that means every January day in the Yaak. Naturally I haven’t done it. I noticed a poker author living up in MT said the same thing. Maybe they’re onto something.
