Pawn shop finds

Pawn shops

Although I have heard of some buys around here,
the 2 best were $50 for an almost new Shurtz Break/Jump
Cue which normally sells for $350, and a friend of mine
got a Kodak digital camera for $60 which sold for about
$400 at the time, and one of his hobbies is taking
pictures of Poolplayers in action at tournaments.

Though I mostly cruz the pawn shops for Guitars, I did see a Meucci Tomahawk being picked up that looked like it had never been used.
I wouldn't have minded being a couple of minutes ahead of his arrival to the pawn shop. I think he only paid $50.oo for it. Sweet Deal for him.
I did however pick up a Meucci Music/Piano cue on Ebay that I would like to find more information about.... anyone?

forgot to mention the doc fry cue/pawn shop find

i forgot to mention the cue shown in blue book of cues, 3rd edition as a doc fry-about $1500 of great hitting cue, original shaft, really good condition for the age. the one i have has rind\gs in the buttpiece,above the wrap and below/above joint. oh yeah, $35 including tax!
=woodyosborne]just cruiding the pawn shops on a day off. stopped in at one and found a huebler 4 pointer in 97% shape for $29.95! cleaned off the ferrule and butt cap with a magic eraser and stick looks great. this is the same place i have gotten a george"V" vinyl ostrich case for about $7 and a george soft suede case for $5. no i am not going to tell you where:D happy new year to all of you!! be safe, woody[/QUOTE]
 
i came across a dozen of old english billiard cues made in the 10s-40s not in a pawn shop, as we dont have them here, but from an antique shop. those cues were chucked in a corner and still had badly rusted metal cases. the proprietor told me he bought it off old country clubs in Malaysia. i bought them each for 20usd, refurbished each for another 50usd, and sold each of them for between 400usd-700usd. Some of the cues were Joe Davises, Tom Newman, and even a JP Mannock.Guess u guys wouldnt know what they are unless u collect old english cues.

I got a cheap jump/break cue with a 1x1 case for $10. I've seen Meuccis, Vikings, McDermotts, Adams and a lot of others but the only one that I would consider rolled straight was Nick Varner for about $50. I don't know enough about Nick Varner cues to know what it was worth.

I worked in Billiard Retail, and one of the reason cues are so wildly priced are because they would call me for pricing on cues. They would drive me crazy, Instead of doing some research on their own, so I would throw out wild pricing. Example $50 for a sportscraft, and $9 for a Viking. Sorry to all you pawn shop buyers in the Indy area.

Good for you! I get people all the time wanting me to stop waiting on customers who are actually spending money and instead appraise thier cue (for Ebay) or ask for step by step instructions on how to cover a pool table. It does get frustrating weeding out the people that are wasting your time and those who deserve a helping hand. I always tell pawn shops cues are $50 with no case and $75 with a case. You get what you pay for. Of course, my favorite phone call question is: "I have a pool cue, what is it worth?" I tell them to hold it closer to the phone so I can appraise it. (sarcasm intended) :rolleyes:
 
Those who know Mr. Jim Ingram (cuemaker in Oklahoma City) know that nothing beats his pawn shop story.

He bought what he believed to be a Balabushka (yup... no BS, the real thing) in a pawn shop for like $75 many years ago. I believe he told me that he sold it shortly after for $500 or so because he wasn't sure about it and got offered the $500 when he needed money. Well, he came to find out later that it was in fact the real thing and worth about ten times that (or more) when he was told that the $500 buyer sent it to Tascarella for his opinion.

I think Jim still gets sick to his stomach at times over it. I know I would.
