Pay Per View Costs

Seriously $17.95 per day for the Gotham City PPV??? I have already budgeted some money for the US Open at $9.95 per day. I don't know about anyone else but I can not afford all these PPVs. It's more expensive to watch live pool regularly then any other sport on the planet.

Yeah, I definitely find myself making tough decisions about what ones to pay for. I can't help but wonder if it would be better if they only charged $5/day and $10/event and tried to make up the difference in volume.

I know I wouldn't hesitate to throw down $5 in most cases or $10 for a few days coverage, but when it's $10-15+ per day and $25+ per event I often have to decide it just doesn't fit into my budget. I won't even say it's not worth it, I just can't afford to do them all or it cuts into the money I have budgeted to actually play.

But, maybe I'm wrong...maybe the subset of people who are willing to pay something to watch pool but not pay the current costs is too small to make up the difference if the price was lowered and I'm sure it's not cheap to cover these events.

Steinway after the U.S Open will be $18.00. Pricing themselves out of the PPV. I won't be doing the PPV for either tournament. Johnnyt

Maybe a GoFundMe page is in order?

ppv

not going to buy either. i buy most streams but this is a little much. i will buy the us open early bird special.

I'm in the streaming business and am thankful for your comments here.

Price point is tough to figure out sometime.

I wonder how many people they get streaming at $10-15/day compared to that to some of the free streams to see how much of the pool watching market they're getting at that price? If that was known, then with some conscious changes to price and the associated changes in viewership one could probably determine a formula that would represent the price elasticity of streamed pool content, at least for events of similar importance/magnitude. Then you should be able to determine the revenue maximizing price for a pool stream.

So long as American pool has no organization and no schedule of sanctioned tournaments, streaming will be on a tournament by tournament basis, with wildly varying prices and wildly varying quality.

Snooker has an actual tournament schedule, and you can buy annual streaming for about $45.00.
For major tournaments two tables are streamed.

I realize they need to make money off of live streams but I'm curious of the number difference. I can't remember the exact number but I know for Turning Stone it was free and there were 2k viewers, maybe more. It would be cool to see it set up like a Twitch livestream where it's free or a few buck with a donate button. Ads are no longer a viable option because so many people use ad-block but there is no way I would pay almost 20 dollars a day for an event I know I won't be home the whole time for. If it's 5 dollars I'll buy it just incase I'm home.

Well said, Scarahouche.
Unfortunately to the layman, it simply looks as if the streamers are "pricing out" the viewer.
As you said, when there's no centralized support nor industry-related organization for those
doing actual WORK around the pool-playing, the pricing is going to be dictated by those same individuals doing the WORK.

If we complain about the varying costs perhaps we should buy all the equipment,
travel to the instant tournament, setup and stream the event ourselves.

Almost each time there are a lot of complaints about PPV price too high for certain events, esp new events or events that had tech problems last time the streamer or promoter digs their heels in and refuses to drop the price. Almost all of these PPV's get very small amount of paid viewers. So don't listen to your customer base streamers and promoters and see how long you last doing PPV.

Every poolroom and sports bar that has a lot of tournaments and action matches streamed should have their own set-up for a good stream. That way they can charge a small amount, get more viewers for their sponsors to draw from. Johnnyt

Devil's advocate:

Listen to your customers and go broke because you can't pay the costs associated with providing a free stream for events.

Those prices are absolutely ridiculous... I wanted to watch the Gotham and Steinway but 18.00 per day is nuts. And for one table. Most of the time , whoever the tournament director wants will be on the one streamed table as opposed I majority of fans want to see. Not to mention the usual chip eating/ what I had for dinner commentary going on. It's a world class tournament with all the big dogs in the states but it's no kozoom... That price would. Be understandable but even their early price isn't like his per day ratio

have a feeling the stream buyers is not going to be high for this one. Perhaps a 1 time buy for a discounted price of whole tourney would sell better! ;)

$18/day to watch pool during football season?? Count me out too.

I might consider $10/day for this tournament if theres a matchup I'm interested in watching.

@Teacherman - enjoyed the Bergman/Shaw stream

I liked what was done at Vivian's Tornado Open, they included an on demand option for 1 year, another option would be to loop the stream as TAR did.
Normally I try to support the PPV's but am travelling this weekend and can't watch live. I didn't see anything on the flyer regarding looping and the price is on the high side so I'm sitting this one out.
For a marquee action match or prominent tournament $10/day with a package discount seems to be the sweet spot. Hopefully the broadcasters also have advertisers lined up to help the bottom line.
I would be surprised if many ppv packages for this event are sold, which is too bad, it looks like a great event leading up to the US Open 9-Ball.
I would guess if this one were priced at $25/event or $10/day, the total packages sold would be several multiples higher. Not a science, just an observation from someone who has tried to pay attention to this area.

Although it will never happen, it would be so cool if there were a channel on cable TV dedicated just to pool that would involve showing tournaments. I would pay around $10 a month for such a channel.

I agree that some of these stream prices are getting out of hand and I certainly won't pay $18 to stream this tournament
