Penalty Card?

I was watching a semi final straight pool match between Neils and Joshua when Neils was on a run of 80 plus balls and missed and easy 5 ball to end his run and probably the match I didn’t finish it because of dinner time. Neils was obviously upset with himself and his miss and retreated to his chair tapping his cue on the ground on the way to his seat. At this point the referee hurried over to him and displayed a penalty card. What the hell is this a pool match or a soccer game!?

Pool needs some character not the squeaky clean image they’re trying to impose on it!
Earl would have told that referee to pack that card where the sun don’t shine!!!

Niels doesn't strike me as a guy prone to outbursts. As long as the players are respectful, I think it's more fun to watch when they show emotion. I love when there are reaction shots of the sitting player.

break your cue, i don't care, but don't hit the table or other property that isn't yours. or another person, of course. it's fairly simple.

Like others, I like some animation and exuberance in a pool match. That said, let's not confuse animation and exuberance with bad sportsmanship.

Niels, who has always been a role model in pro pool, was in the wrong here and I'm sure he'd tell you as much. And yes, it's likely that Strickland, who has shown less respect for opponents and referees than any player of this generation, would surely have done something disrespectful on this occasion.

Niels did not exhibit any outburst that was disrespectable to anybody he just was clearly unset with himself that he missed that easy shot for taking his eye off the ball. He simply tapped his cue on the floor on the way back to his chair, does this justify a penalty warning from the referee?

I know Niels very well and he is a great guy, and one heck of a player. Class act guy I’d give the keys of my house too. He’s not a milk drinker, lol especially after they won the Mcup in 2012. I saw the party and the remains of the party the next morning-man that was fun. No milk that night. I just drank water…..

Look, I’m not condoning bad behavior by any means, but what determines bad behavior? Certainly the time when the mercurial Mosconi flung his cue across the tournament room like a spear and stuck it in a wall after a miss or loss I can’t remember which, or the time that Chris MacDonald smashed his Meucci cue to smithereens on the side of the table at one of the Sands opens during the 90’s or the time that Mike Sigel smashed his cue on floor breaking a shaft after a scratch playing a young John Schmidt are all unacceptable. This incident involving Niels certainly did not rise to that occasion In my opinion.

Unless it looked a lot different than what you are describing, that in no way justifies a warning.

Pretty soon we will see players flopping like they do in soccer when they fake being hurt and then jump up and run down the field like Usain Bolt.. The cards are stupid unnecessary theatre intended to solicit a reaction from the participants and spectators..

It's like doing a timeout or sitting them in a corner with a dunce hat! LOL..

Unless it looked a lot different than what you are describing, that in no way justifies a warning.

Agreed, if the hitting of one's cue on the ground after an error truly merits a penalty, there will likely be about fifty yellow cards in any given pool event. Hence, I'm not inclined to believe that this is all there is to it.

Again, as I mentioned in post #9 above unless Niels did something akin to what Mosconi, MacDonald or Sigel did I don’t believe Niels deserved that penalty warning. Niels did not show disrespect for anyone, nor did he have any kind of outburst he was just clearly upset with himself after the miss. I watched this match on Kozoom so I don’t have a link to review it although it may be on YouTube somewhere.

Niels is a class act and didn’t deserve this in my opinion.

No, as I said in my last post above I watched it on Kozoom so I don’t have the link unfortunately. As I said it may be on YouTube somewhere. It was a semi final straight pool match I think in Slovenia bit I’m not sure. I‘d like to see it again myself if someone can find it.

Don't forget: After Earl won his 14.1 match in the latest 14.1 World Championships, which left him the winner of his group and meant he would advance to the elimination rounds, he assaulted Hunter Lombardo who had been practicing on a table near Earl's match. Apparently, Earl was upset at Hunter for talking to Joshua Filler while they practiced. Earl was promptly thrown out of the tournament, and his prize money was forfeited.

Shortly thereafter, Earl's reputation was suddenly rehabilitated when he was chosen for the Mosconi Cup. But karma is a bitch, and Earl was prevented from playing in the Mosconi Cup because someone on his plane to Europe tested positive for covid, and Earl was not vaccinated.
