Perma-Rack Setup and Initial Impressions

Hey all!

I’ve been doing my own donut racks on my table for a couple of years because Perma-Rack doesn’t offer international sales through eBay or their website. However, frequenting AZB more recently, I noticed the seller has a presence here and reached out to him. We quickly sorted out international shipping, and I was able to use the template to quickly setup 15 donuts that gave a pretty good result, but not perfect. My impressions below (this is Shuddy, not Diamond Dave, so there won’t be any surprise sex toys):

Thanks for good info. You seem to have good grasp about racking and templates. My experience is similar.

Laser level for the spot and kitchen lines? Never use the diamonds to lay out the table. A tape measure is going to be far more accurate. Measure from the nose of the cushions exactly the same distance from the sides and end rails.

I live on an island in South Korea. You try dealing with a grumpy Korean ajjeoshi (middle aged man) who thinks his elite 3 cushion table skills are being wasted on a pocket ball table 😂

I’ll take what I can get.

EDIT: Sorry, thank you for the advice. I can still still use your suggestion to check the accuracy of the marks he made.

No surprise sex toys, just the usual standard sex toys.

I would be interested to know what you find when you measure. I think maybe lining up on the diamonds would make more sense on a billiard table, since most billiard players are going to know and use the diamond system for judging their shots.

It's a great product. You can also get clear dots that work just as well, possibly a tiny bit thinner, and are less visually distracting.

For Jason's session, including the 714, it is my understanding they were using an Outsville prototype racking setup.

Would it make it easier to place the donuts accurately if you first laid the template in the right spot, then used a pencil to draw the full circles onto the cloth, then lifted the template, then applied the donuts using the penciled circles as a guide?

Oh! Interesting! Thanks for that 👍

EDIT: Just put in an order, so I’ll do a comparison once it arrives.

Possibly. The template holes are oversized, so you’d still be relying on getting them in the right position by hand. However, it would be slightly easier not navigating the thick template and not worrying about moving it.

Good video. Can you measure the center-to-center spacing of the holes?
I’ll do my best. Actually, before I ordered this template, I was using one of your (I think it was yours) templates from Dr. Dave’s site, printing them out, punching holes in them, and marking the table.

It looked like that could help. I'll get one and give it a try. Thanks for posting the video on this.

I do this with a thin sharpie. Makes it easy to replace donuts as needed. My table is a tool, marking it up doesn't bother me.

I have a $170 custom hand-made wood rack that I don't use any more since switching to this system. I use the clear Avery page savers and, as stated, are flatter than the white ones. It takes an extra second or two to rack the balls but it's worth it, IMHO.

Fwiw, I designed a more user friendly template master. It’s clear thin plastic and the holes are smaller to improve donut placement. Let me know if anyone wants to try it out. I can get out all the stuff to remake them and I figure I can send em out for like 5 bucks all-in. First 5 or so people. I dont really want to start selling a 5 dollar thing. Doh!

The key issues with this type of template, and the reason I designed my own, is that that the donuts need to be slightly adjusted after placement to get all the balls tight. And because adjusting the donuts is necessary, I found that a template master that could stay on the table was required. I can see which balls/donuts need adjustment when racked and “fix” it in real time.

This version is so easy to use that you could take it to the pool hall and get the donut template in place in well under 5 minutes.

Use some Calipers on the plastic template.... then add the dia of one of the holes. (y)
