Pete Margo?

A friend of mine Pete Sinkler introduced me to Pete Margo, Jimmy Rempe, and Allen Hopkins one night at the Super Billiards Expo. They were all super nice chit chattin and all. I felt totally out of place. Pete Margo walked away Allen said, "that man had a high gear only few players have ever reached!" everyone there agreed. It was obvious all the pros had alot of respect for the man. I think he went into the Record store biz, or something like that?.....Gerry

I think that Pete was very involved with West Coast Video stores. He was an excellent player. I saw Pete run 138 and out on a friend of mine in a very smooth manner. Fred

Pete Margo

Backpocket,

Pete Margo Is A Good Friend Of Mine. He Is Very Successful Buisness Man. Really Doesn't Have Anything To Do With Pool Anymore. The Last Time I Seen Him Was At Jack's 14.1 Tournament At Comet Billiards. He Came With Pauly Sorvino And His Brother Pete.

Peace....................

Pete Margo, of Staten Island, NY, was one of the great straight poolers, and his finest effort came in the 1979 World Open Straight Pool Championships, where, if memory serves, he had six different hundred ball runs. He was runnerup to Allen Hopkins in the 1977 World Open, too. Pete won many titles in the 1970's but gave up pro pool in the early 1980's.

Pete, if I remember the story right, had a sizable stake in Palmer Video, which he'd gotten as a result of his sponsorship deal with Palmer Cues. When the video business boomed in the early 1980's, Pete hit it big fnancially and gave up pro pool.

I seem to run into Pete about once every two years or so. He's usually with Paul Sorvino or Charlie Ursitti (tournament producer/director and Mosconi's business maanger). Pete's a super guy and I always enjoy chatting with him. He was some kind of player, and was very popular with the fans, including a fan named SJM, who saw him compete on many occasions.

SJM,
As I've mentioned before, I did see Pete Margo compete on several occasions (straight pool and 8-ball) at the small exhibition tournament held yearly at the Hawk's Nest in Pittsburgh during the early 70's. Though Mizerak totally dominated, EVERYONE was impressed with Pete's personality - very dynamic and very entertaining (more so than everyone else). Did he have the same effervescence when playing in tournaments???

Most definitely yes. Pete was flashy and charismatic. Like his contermporary Jimmy Rempe, he seemed to embrace the styles of the 1970's, and both were admired for it. Pete was very accessible to the fans, and had a certain exuberance about him that seemed to rub almost everybody the right way.

As one of the founders and administrators of the PPPA in the mid-1970s, Pete contirbuted to his sport, as well. People knew it and admired him for it.

PS On an unrelated note, one thing I never knew about Pete until he told me a couple of years ago was that he was a big Jean Balukas fan.

SJM,
Now that you mention it, he did have a fairly substantial "white-man-Afro-perm" at the time - hopefully this fashion statement did not continue for him. :) :)

Yes, Pete abandoned that look long ago -- probably cost him a role on "That 70s Show."
