> I had a phenolic tip installed about a year ago,and wound up not liking it. What I did was face the phenolic off flat, and installed an "abused" Sumo. What I mean by "abused" is the tip was initially squashed dead flat in a large milling machine vise, installed, then I beat on it with a steel plate that I use to level the back of my tips. After cutting it down to 1/2 the normal height,I beat on it some more, and regularly bounce it off a concrete floor. I still have not got it as hard as I want it,but I can finally "squat" the cue ball again. With the phenolic tip,the cue ball was coming back to where I wanted it,but then shot forward. No amount of backspin or "pinch" could solve this, never mind the other stuff I tried. Facing it off and installing a regular tip can't possibly hurt. Tommy D.
