i have a break cue with a phenolic tip.but i also have some trouble,i've gotten better but, with flying the table.i was watch nevel break in memphis and he was using a predator break cue that appeared to have a leather tip.by the way he was crushin em like always.does a phenolic tip help?if so why use a leather tip?i realize if your using some type of cut break a leather tip would be better.as far as power however is it that much better than say a hard leather tip?

I also have a break stick with a phenolic tip and have noticed some difficulty controlling the cue ball off the break. I have noticed though that it seems to work very well for me by breaking off the right side rail and hitting slightly below center with reduced speed. Obviously the harder i hit the more difficult it is to control the cue ball. I have also thought about switching to a hard tip but i am continuing to work on it.

Put your shaft on a lathe & have your phenolic tip flattened. Take some of the crown off and have it made fairly flat and then suddenly you will be able to get the cueball to park. Too much dome on a phenolic tip is a bad thing as it makes it way too easy to get unwanted english on a slight off hit on the power break.;) The flat tip provides a much larger "sweet" spot.

Or you can learn to "park" your cueball by adjusting your address to the cueball.

This can be achieved fairly easily with about 30 minutes to an hour of concerted practice and self-observation.

This works with any tip, leather or phenolic, rounded or flattened.

You just have to break and adjust and break and adjust and break and adjust. 15 minutes with the BREAK RAK helped my break more than any break cue ever did or ever will.

On that I WILL bet HUGE FAT GREEK SUB SANDWICH SIZED BANKROLLS. Because I know that on this subject I have the royal locked down hungarian nuts.

leather

thanks i will try those hints.but what i really mean is do you all think phenolic is better.i break pretty hard(i clocked it at the derby at 27 mph,and might get another couple of mph when i'm loose),can i get as much speed from a leather tip, will it control the "kill" better,is it easier?i realize breaking the balls hard isn't totally neccessary but i think its good to be able to do it.

I've had the same experience... and that's the reason why I had my cuemaker shave the (stock) phenolic tip off of my BK2 and replace it with a Talisman BK (leather) tip, which was a freebie when I bought a package of PRO mediums tips for my player... I now have much better control on my breaks w/o losing much on the speed end. :)

IMO, phenolic tips are best saved for jump sticks. ;)

basically phonelic is a harder matieral that when comparied scientificaly will provide more energy transferance. the problem with them, which is why some people choose to use leather, is they do not hold chalk for dam. for this reason many people experiance alot of miscues till they get used to them. leather holds chalk much better providing easier application of english. theres also alternitives to both. theres the white diamond that is hard like phonelic and holds chalk really well like leather. theres also verneys break tip whcih has gotten great revies, though i have never used one so i cann't comment on thier performance.
