Philippine Aid for this week!

Thanks for posting this. I'm headed to Cebu tonight to visit friends there. I have sent money directly to a few people already who have been affected by this massive storm. They lost their homes and all their possessions! What they are asking for mostly is WATER! That's how bad it is. In the hardest hit areas, no one is working, there is no school, no banks or money places like Western Union are open, and no one has any money! People are surviving day to day until help arrives. The rebuilding can't and won't begin for months.

This is one of the worst natural disasters of modern times. Imagine a 100 mile wide category five tornado making a swath across heavily populated land, with virtually no terrain to slow it down. And millions of people in the path were living in tin shacks and wooden shanties. It will be amazing to me if there are only 10,000 dead when all is said and done. More people are dying daily. Think New Orleans after Katrina and multiple that by 100!

The news here is far more graphic, showing the true scope of devastation caused by this once in a lifetime hurricane. And many remote villages have yet to be reached with any relief supplies after six days! :shakehead:

Some folks on FB have written that the Philippine Red Cross is a good one to help. They have boots on the ground and are reaching out effectively. :)

Jay, make sure that you bring enough cash. I also went to the Visayas region for 4 days and there were no ATM's available as well as credit card access - most local bank servers are down over there. take care on your flight.

Thanks, I'm still stuck in the Davao airport. The flight to Cebu may not happen tonight. There is too much congestion at the Cebu airport with all the relief flights going through there. Philippine Airlines is using some of their planes to get people from Tacloban to Cebu. They want to get as many people as possible out of there to ease the situation. I could wait here all night or accept a ticket to Manila, which I what I did.

I'm glad that you and yours are well. I gave to the Salvation Army to make sure that most of the donation goes to the needy and not the admins....like in Haiti.

Be well out there, Jay! I'm absolutely stunned by some of the footage that I'm seeing from the Philippines. It's unbelievable what's happening in the world these days due to climate change. First, the most powerful tornadoes EVER in Oklahoma and now this. To think that people work so hard in their lives, only to have everything ruined by storms like these. It's heart-wrenching.
