Phillipino dominance?

Dennis and Jeff are from the same stable, Bugsy, so nobody will match them up. Roy may have 'coz he probably just wants to watch such a match-up. He can give us his reasoning here.

We (me and pooladdict) were invited by Bugsy Promotions to play at their place, and practise with their 10 players here the two weeks we are here.

I paid because I wanted to see the match, no doubt of that. That's also why we backed Roberto Gomez against Ronnie Alcano at Side Pocket for 5 000 Pesos, and Roberto won 13 - 8. They both play for Bugsy too.

I think many foreigners can do well down here, but only for small money, so the reason for going here should be with the purpose of practise, not winning money.

However, pooladdict (member of azb too) have made more money than he has won in money games, and he has started to play even with people now.

the dominance thing. I see more as if you take or go yourself as an average player to these places, can you get respect from those in the venue. China has depth of talent. Theres so many of them who can play and do. Everywhere, in backwater towns and big cities. I don't get dominated here in mainland China, well a few times but I get even. Phillipines, I don't know about not having been there but it sounds brutal. But put those guys, the average pinoy in a redneck pub in america, he might have trouble handling everything cause theres a lot that goes on that has nothing to do with pool that happens too. Seems the top flight players interchange spots on the pecking order quickly and randomly with every other event.

One thing I know for sure. If, it's as Roy says where unknowns offer up huge spots to white foreigners then the Phillipines is a perfect place for some American pool hustlers to come and ply their trade. I wonder how quickly the spots would dry up once an American started winning some sets? I bet I could find some near world beater class Americans who could lemonade their way through winning some sets where they are getting spotted. $10 may not mean much to us but it goes a long way towards fun in the Phillipines and Free Fun is a lot funner than that you have to pay for. :-) Yeah, yeah, I know bring it on, we have all age groups here willing to take you on. The "hustle" goes both ways you know.

There will be a few foreigners who might get away with it, but the hustle is
always on in the Philippines. They might be setting you up for the bigger loot,
and you'll be in for a big surprise because they are usually well informed.
Try asking Fabio Petroni, Marcus Chamat and Tang Hoa about their sad
experiences back there, they usually play against unknown C players who's
actually a B+ or worse, an A player that was kept hidden very well.
They usually stay under the radar and try to be inconspicuous, which is the
norm back there.

And BTW, they are a dime a dozen back home!
:D

Sorry to hear that Sunrise closed down. I missed my mahjongg and tong-its
sessions there. How about Lucky 13? Does Abe still runs the place?

Many Filipinos here says that they think the Chinese will be hard to beat in the years to come... Unfortunately I haven't got a chance to see the Taiwanese players or been in Taiwan yet, but after my experience here in Manila I think the Filipinos are much better...

Roadie: I agree with you that the best German players can beat the best Filipinos players. It would be a great match! However, there is a rumour which I have heard from both Ralf Souquet, Roberto Gomez and the manager of Bugsy Promotions that they are working with setting up a Team Match, Germany - Philippines, here in Manila sometimes in April... (Sorry if this is written already, I haven't read everything in this thread)

Right now I am at One Side pool hall and soon there will start a 1 000 000 Pesos match, I don't know the names of the players, but it has attracted a lot of people already...

My friend pooladdict has just won 15 - 12, playing even with a guy, for 5 000 Pesos, now it is race to 12, double or nothing.

Later tonight Bustamente will play a match for 20 000 Pesos against a local player, Lulung. Lulung is a good player, I practised with him for a race to 9 now. I don't get any good matches no more, the match against Efren has ruined my handicap, so I only practise with players and pay the tabletime. I have no problems losing money, but I don't want to feel like I am only giving it away.

Lolong at best is a B- player, but that's according to Philippine standard.
Weird looking guy, but a very good card player (Pusoy 2).

Lolong would have been a very good Norwegian player ;)

In the match against Busta he gets the 5 and 8 in 10-ball, leading 8 - 4 now, race to 18, so guess it's true with B player compared to the Filipino standard.

Alcano is now warming up for a Rotationmatch against Efren, who will be at One Side shortly. Can't wait for that match...

Would you mind videoing a rack or two of that match for the AZ community? :p

Thanks for all the updates.

Ready to graduate to no handicap matches?

Any good push from the goverment or sponsors to send more Chinese to tournaments abroad?

that's not the point. your original reply where you said if you had a backer you'd be giving spots too you made it sound like 10yr olds with backers and giving spots is nothing special.

I don't think I was aiming for that tone with my comments but I think Roy and others who talk about the vast depth of talent in the Phillipines are the ones who make it sound as if gambling ten year olds were the norm.

No has even mentioned whether these kids do have backers. I presume they do as there are always far less talented people who live their pool fantasies through pitting players against each other. Some people have their prize fighting roosters, others their pit bulls, and others still have their human versions in pool players. Which is why, to me, 10 year olds who are gambling for their "survival" is pathetic. It is sad that they have to, sad that there are people who facilitate it.

We have it in the USA too. Go to Valley Forge and watch all the kiddies up at 3 in the morning trying to match up. Very often their parents will be right beside them staking the game. These kids aren't learning anything except how to lie to get a game and how to become addicted to the action and "easy" money. As much as I love action this aspect of it makes me sick. I don't care if kids are hanging in the poolroom and gambling their allowance with other kids. Those are life lessons. It's when adults get into the picture and start using these kids to further their own ends and ambitions. We all like to read about the teen wonder. Do any of us wonder how that kid is doing when he's 23?

No, I know full well the value of $10 in the Phillipines, in China, in Mexico, in the Czech Republic, and so on. I am not seeking to cheapen it at all. Just to make a statement that it's not worth a life to be putting kids in action, in my opinion. But, if I were ten year's old and in the pool room and someone wanted to stake me giving up weight then I would play without hesitation. Especially if losing cost me nothing and winning was lucrative.

Efren - Alcano 11 - 7. (or 6, don't remember) Alcano did more mistakes than Efren. I didn't watch the whole match, but remember only a 7-ball that Efren missed...

A lot of people at One Side today, and the first thing Efren did when he entered was to ask me if I wanted to play one-pocket after his match. Thought that was pretty cool, so couldn't say no, but shouldn't have played today. I played really, really bad, and Efren had warmed up on the table beating Alcano, so I didn't have a chance at all. Lost 3 - 0 and 3 - 0, Efren made some crazy bankshots...

Today he understood he could easily beat me compared to the match at Side Pocket, so he smiled and sang while playing.

After a shot I played I said "safety", it looked like a good shot for me, and he just laughed and said "no no, no safety" before he without hesitation made an incredible bankshot...

What was the worst for me today was that Jay Helfert was looking at my match, I hoped I could have played better with him as a spectator :)

For your information, Dennis Orcullo lost 23 - 21 to Lee Van Corteza today, and has now lost 3 times in 4 days for that player... So who is the money king now?

Van Van plays damned strong, lol.

-Roger (hard to be king of anything pool-related in the PHI for long...)

Let's wait if Gabica and Busta will play against Van Van, then we might have a new money king.
