Photo Essay On Joint... Please?

Hey guys. I'm new to cues (meaning I haven't made one but would like to). I do a lot of guitar building mostly, but figured building one or two cues for personal use with my offcuts would be fun. I hesitate to buy expensive videos and books since I don't plan to make many and only plan to make simple solid wood (no points, etc.) handles (no shafts either, will buy those). However, the one part that I'm having trouble visualizing how to do is the tenon, drilling and tapping of the joint between the handle and the shaft. If someone could take a bunch of pictures of how to do this next time they make one and then post them here with some explanations I'd be very grateful!
Also, I'm trying to do this with as few tool purchases as possible, so simple methods would be best. Shouldn't one be able to simply turn the tenon, drill the appropriate sized hole, tap it by hand, screw in a bolt and pair it with a purchased shaft?
Any help's appreciated!

wouldnt suggest doing that!!!!!!
someone on az, i cannot for the life of me remember who it is, at the moment, has a few videos of thier procedures
videos from thier website is what i mean to say
have fun, and be prepared to add to your firewood pile
dont let it discourage you though
the greats have a stash of mistakes also

If your AZ name is a indication that you live in North Carolina, just guessing at the nc at the end of your name. I'm in NC and if you need the joint pin hole drilled and tapped to the very popular and good hitting 3/8 by 10 thread I can help with that and squaring the joint face. You can buy any kind of low deflection shaft or a good maple shaft with this thread and I might have several of each in stock.--Leonard

Then again the AZ name may be a billiard table

Here is how you do it.

Go and buy the Chris Hightower book on cue making.
Read the chapter on JOINTS.
Then you will know how it is done and what you will need to do it.
Then when you have questions come on back and lets talk cue making.

Here is the link:

If you are not willing to do that much for yourself, then I am simply not willing to waste any of my time with you.

Sorry if that sounds a bit rude but please ... you really want me to stop what I am doing and put together a photo essay to teach you something that is already available if you will just go get it?

If you really are to tight to buy that book perhaps someone here will loan you theirs ... I would except I loned it out and have not got it back yet ...:sorry:

You probably cought Willee on a bad day, because he normally goes above and beyond to be helpful, but I have to agree with him that your question is just to broad. However, if you use the search feature, it wouldn't surprise me if you can find the step by step directions that you're looking for. Also, I haven't seen it, but Lee has a video for just $20 bucks here and Barringer has his here for just $25. Denali Cues has some misc pictures and videos on their site, as does Bob Dzuricky.
Good luck with your project. :)

Shop tours

Thanks for posting that. Bob has a nice site. I love the shop tour sections that some of the cue makers have.

The NC in my name is actually part of my name hahahaha. Last letter of the last, first of the first. However, I am moving to NC in Oct... Charlotte. I guess the thing to do is to buy a book and/or DVD set.
Chris

Well I am 15 minutes from Charlotte and have lived at the same address for all 51 of my years so when you get to town let me know and I'll tell you how to get to my Friday night tournament.--Leonard

Cool man! Sounds like fun! I gotta say though, I'm not a great pool player hahahaha. I love playing, and I love woodworking, which is why I'm here.... but my playing skills... not so great. Either way, I'll be sure to hit you up on that when I get there. Probably like late Oct.
