pick-random shaft with tip of choice or vice versa

Tip.

I have played with some bananas off the wall...just pick one with a reasonable tip.

Of course, either extreme blows the proposition out of the water.

An unplayable warp with a good tip? No.

An unplayable tip with a great shaft? No.

We have all been in bars with a table and a rack of cues with not a single cue to play with. All bent with no tip at all. LOL!

Very often it is a compromise of both when playing with crap bar cues.

Some will say anything can be playable...but let's be reasonable here. :p

Well you can change a tip for around $20... You don't cut the shaft off a tip and buy a new shaft now, do you?

Your tip needs to compliment your shaft, cue weight, and stroke style. Generally with a lighter and/or thinner shaft you can go with a harder tip and achieve the same spin. You'll actually want a medium-to-hard tip rather than super soft if you have a light/thin cue because with a soft tip you'd have to put a hard stroke on far too often to move the ball around the table.

If you play a heavier cue 19.5-21 oz or have a harder hitting shaft, you'll probably want a softer tip to keep your control where you want it.

If your tip/shaft combo hits too hard or spins too much you'll have trouble making position. You have to find the right balance for you.

Some tips installed thicker or thinner give the same effects.....

If your trying to let the shaft be itself then yes tips matter I suppose but not to the degree of needing lamination imop
