Great Pictures!

Larry,
those are some really awesome pictures, way cool!!, thanks for sharing them.
The Venue/Building kinda reminds me of an old train station, looks like everyone was having a good time.:)

Thanks for posting those nice pic's Larry. Sorry I missed you this weekend...I was all over the place.

The 'BIG' room had 120 tables set up. There were another 30 tables in a different room and we had 8 tables set up for the Seniors event in the Raddisson Hotel across the street. They were very greatful for that touch...it was much more comfortable and quiet for us old guys.

The Tournament this year was a great success. We had nearly 1800 players signed up for nearly 3000 matches in our 18 events. Quite a turn out, eh.

Everyone enjoyed the Tournament and the vendors were great. It definitely was a good time had by all. And only a couple of minor problems that were soon resolved.

Thanks to all that participated and those that only spectated (is that a word?). We'll do it again next year...same time (actually April 7-11), same place. Maybe you'll come see the spectical for yourself.

Looks like you caught my best side in one of your photos. Thanks....:o

Thanks for posting the pics from the best state tournament in the US.

A good time was had by all.

Ken, lets not get too happy about the tournament. The vendor got screwed by the chuckie cheese tokens. The tables were borderline terrible. The balls were awfuly dirty. Why are we using Valley tables and balls anyhow ????

The one good thing the tournament has going for it is its ran well, Ill give you all that. The times are always nice, so you can actually eat and take bathroom breaks. ( or hit the casinos :) )

Next year lets work on DIAMOND pool tables again and green fee's or $1 tokens so you all dont get screwed again.

Also in the room across the street, why not put a couple tables aside with extra seating around where you play finals matches. That way people can watch if they like, and the people playing can have some room and not be bumping into other's. Also why not announce some of these matches and draw some spectator interest.

Some of the results are posted on Iowapoolplayers.com

Julies site just shows iowa (mostly des moines) results.

Hope i dont get in trouble for posting that link.

The 'Chuckie Cheeze' thing was rather unfortunate. The only one's that got hurt on that were High Contry promotions and the ISPA. If you got a bogus coin out of the change machine, that did not hurt us...only the one's that went from the crooks hand into the tables...I'd like to get my hands on that A-hole.

I thought the tables played just fine. I'd venture a guess that they are better than most bar tables you'll find state wide...in any state. I thoght they were consistant from one table to another and that's most important. I hate jumping from fast to slow cloth and then back again.

I guess I didn't notice that the balls were all that dirty. I know they weren't all shinny and waxy, but they looked OK to me. Maybe you are more picky than me.

I thank you, and I'm sure Gary thanks you for the comment about the timed matched. That, in my opinion, is the best reason to consider the ISPA Tournament as one of the best run in the Nation. No waiting around the Brackets for your next match to be called. As you mentioned, you actually have the time to go to supper with all confidence as to when your next match is...it's posted befroe the tournament even began.

We have looked at Diamond tables. The bids were very close but an argument was made that most of the players around the state use Valley tables and a sudden change might not be acceptable to the players. As far as I know, Big Dogs is the only place that has Diamonds, but I did notice that they do have plenty of Valleys as well.

We are working on a 'pit' type arena for the finals. I think we might be able to accomodate that next year...we'll see.

See you next year?

They had Diamond tables back when my team won the open team event, (2003?) not sure of the year. It was a one time deal and lots of people liked it. Infact the bar we played out of then bought 3 diamonds right after that tournament as we thought it would always be that way.

This year:
The problem with the tables were in many cases they rolled off more then a ball the length of a table. Now i am not crazy and i do not expect 150 tables to be perfect, but something within reason isnt too much to ask. A little roll here or there would be fine with me. One table we played on across the way, on the short rail (3 1/2') you couldnt slow roll the cue ball into the other corner and sratch it rolled out so much.

Im glad i didnt come up for singles and get in on the fake token mess. I only played team and didnt spend that much anyhow.

Next year:
I will always play, i love the league and the tournament. I even like it being in Davenport even though i live in Des Moines.

Hi brad. nice of your team to make the photos.

You know us, we're always up for a photo-op! Brian was about to get his "butt drilled" and I just couldn't be around for that!

As for the tables, I know alot(in MY mind) had to do w/ the cloth. I know that the cost to use simonis or granito would be very costly but then the table would at least play the same speed. But on a side note, doesn't simonis wear alot better(longer) than regular cloth???
I played a match in the senior room(the ones at the radison) and those were tremedously slower than the ones at the adler center and the mississippi river room.
Also, spending 45 minutes to try to get the balls to rack properly(tight) was rediculious. Its possible that the tables they used this past weekend were probably overdue on being refelted.
As for the balls, dirty or clean, it really don't matter as long as "I Get Mine"! Shiny and clean would be prefered though.

My take

Thanks for the good pics of the tourney. It was a great time as always. I feel like the tourney is run soooo smooth compared to 5 years ago. Having a posted time is really nice and you do have time to go do other things.

A couple of complaints would be that sometimes there is way too much time in between matches. We won a 1pm match and didn't play again till 9 pm. That is a long time to wait. But there are other times that you don't have a break between matches. I played 4 or 5 straight matches in 8 ball Friday. I didn't have time to eat or rest.

I thought that the tables were sub par compaired to other years. It was almost impossible to get a good rack, which lead to horrible breaks. A good amount of the tables that I played on had pretty bad rolls. And it seemed like a lot of the tables sucked balls in the side pockets. I made a 8 ball stop shot near the side, and the ball rolled 2 inches right into the side pocket to lose the match.

Other than that I always think the tourney is great and I look forward to playing every year. I love how it is set up at the rivercenter and hope that it don't move to Des Moines, but if it does then I will go there and have a great time. All around great time and I would advise everyone to come out next year and check it out.
