Piloted vs non-piloted. Risks?

So, I've got here a shaft with a flat face/non-piloted 5/16x18 Joint
Trying to find a new butt to mate it too and everything I find with that thread has a piloted joint.

I've talked to a few different people and everyone has a different opinion on whether or not this is a safe combination. One person tells me they've used a stick this was forever and had no issues. Others have said it's definitely a no-go.

If there are risks of damage, are the risks to the shaft, the butt or both??

I'm also wondering if there's any sort of threaded collar I could thread onto the butt to fill the pilot and make a flat face on it? Or just fill it with some sort of an epoxy or something?

Or is it possible to have a joint on a butt changed? I'd imagine it could be done...but I'm obviously no expert

Any info would be appreciated. Any specifics about changing out the joint and costs involved could be PMed

Thanks in advance :)

It's no problem. With the cheap cues, the pilot doesn't do anything for alignment anyway. Just decoration.

Alignment aside, no worries about any extra stress on the pin, as long as i don't do anything stupidly abusive, like smacking it sideways against something, right?

And will there be any noticeable difference in feel without that direct wood to wood contact surface?

without the the pilot the only things touching are wood to wood:confused:

Wood to wood certainly isn't the only thing touching. You have the threaded brass insert tightly screwed on the steel threaded stud.

Makes it as solid as any piloted joint.

I just meant in that there would be a hollow gap on part of it, not solid contact on the full surface

Again, it seemed to me like it shouldn't be a big deal, but a couple responses I got were just so very adamant that it was such a terrible idea, I figured I better get a few more opinions.

Thanks, I'll go ahead and order the stick I was looking at with the piloted butt and just go with it

thanks all
