I'm buying my first cue that's not from Academy Sports or Wal-Mart.... I know thats painful to hear, but I've been tight for cash. Well the bar league I play for gives you back the $140 you paid to play, but only for equipment. And they'd like us to order from a specific catalog. I have no problem with this seeing that I don't have a proper basis for comparison anyway. My deal is that the cue I'm interested in has a weird pin.

Scorpion AR09 - Archer

it says that it's size is 3/8 X14. Now i was looking around for shafts and it doesn't seem like any of them fit. Am I reading something wrong and maybe its a different kind than I'm thinking? Or do you think a cuemaker can custom make a shaft for me?
In any case, I can play with the cue as is considering I've never played with anything decent.
 
You can always change the pin out to something common like a 3/8-10...the cue will play better too. Your original shaft can be made to fit the new pin and then you can also order custom shafts till your heart is content....314, Tiger X, OB-1, etc.;)
 
Are there people that can do this switching of pins for me? Because I would never trust my "tool of destruction" to myself...
 
I'll change it out for you, and make your shaft fit as well...for $100 & that includes shipping. Done professionally its not a problem.

@Dave - I mentioned that I wouldn't have a problem with playing with it as is, but I really wanna try out an OB-1 or a Pred

Unless you are going to keep the cue for a LONG time, and plan to buy several shafts, switching the joint pin will not be very wise economically.
Save the $ you would use for doing that and put it towards a custom fitted shaft. There are lots of cuemakers that can make you one from any blank you want.

you do know the Scorpion cue (butt & shaft) are fiberglass clad (coated in fiberglass),,,the page you linked did not make that very clear,,,the site only tells 'all' of the story on it's dealer page...

I play everywhere and am pretty well known for being a sucker:p . I always get into bad games and lose my ass. :D usually am a regular at the weekly bananas tournies though. Donating every week.

If your intent is to try an aftermarket shaft in the future, you should buy a cue that has one of the "standard" pins. This would make a lot more sense than paying extra now to have the pin on the Scorpion cue changed, or having to pay extra in the future to have your aftermarket shafts custom fitted to the Scorpion cue. If CueStix, International is the catalog you are buying from, stick to Viking, McDermott, or Joss cues. They are all high quality production cues with traditional pins, and made of wood, not graphite or fiberglass.

I understand that equipment can play a big part in this sport, but I'm kinda low on funds as is. What I have to spend is about how much that particular cue costs. I'm just tired of playing with a house cue really. I don't even know what I should be looking for.

what other brand cues do they have in that specified catalog? i would go for mcdermott as my first production cue, if they have mcd in that catalog. also check out the action elite for that price range. its probably better to stick with a wood cue rather than going fiberglass, like the scorpion. but then again, some people play great with a fiberglass cue. lol. if you can, try shooting with a fiberglass cue at the poolhall before getting the scorpion. there's alot of shooters with fiberglass cues around san antonio, so it shouldnt be hard to find one to try out.
 
I did a quick search and both Viking and Lucasi had a few cues retail for $150 on the catalog you showed us. That is the same price of the cue you want. McDermotts cheapest looked like $180. These cues all have maple shafts. The pins on the Lucasi and Viking are still "non-standard", but I think most of the aftermarket shaft companies do offer shafts to fit them.

You really should stick to a maple shaft. Although some people do like the fiberglass coated shafts, they just never feel as smooth as the maple when sliding through your fingers.
