I am new to the custom cue world but have been playing pool for 40 plus years. I am new to the az posting world but, have been a viewer on az for many years. My question is what is the difference between a G10 pin, wooden pin, titanium, brass, sizes 3/8 X 10, 3/8 X 11, and 5/16. Is the hit different. Why so many different types. If you gave a person 3 different cues could they really tell which one was a brass 3/8 X 11 and which one was a G10 3/8 x 10, and which was a wooden pin. Thank you in advance for your input.

I use the g10 pin and brass 3/8-10 and there is no different in the hit that I can tell . I use the g10 pin to loss weight on heavier and the brass on the lighter cues . The 3/8-10 and 3/8-11 is the closest you can get to wood pin

Ok the 5/16 pins there is 5/16-14 and 5/16-18 both use a brass insert is the hit different if the have the ss joint I can't tell different now if in has joint without ss I think the 5/16-14 plays little different

Now for the wood pins for the hit in my eyes it the best pin if you are play 3 cushion billiards they play just like 1 pc house cue and not fiberglass one lol

Ok that all out here's a ? For you what pin do you have in the cue you use

I have a Shurtz butterfly cue with a brass 3/8 x 11 pin

Awesome cue and I bet it let's you play under the table and the balance point on shurtz cues are dead on your hands.

Are you think of making your own cue?

Yes, i will be shortly with a friend of mine. He makes custom pooltables and furniture, restores antique furniture and pooltables, and also makes cues and shafts for friends. I asked if I could help him in the cue projects as an apprentice of sorts. He was very receptive to the idea so i'm putting my toe in the water.

Buy a ton of maple boards.
Turn them and make cues out of them.
Use as many kinds of pins as you can.
Then draw your own conclusion.

If I told you I can tell the diffence between a G10 , brass and SS pins, would you take my word as fact ?

Your journey starts with experimentation. Not from opinions from other makers.
Learn wood first before metals.
Turn enough different wood to a point you know the smell of their dust.

Hi,

As far as weight goes, Steel, SS, Brass all have specific weights that are about the same. G-10 However weighs less by a significant differential. I prefer chrome plated brass because if I ever have to remove one it is very easy to drill it out, epoxy in an insert and then re-install a pin. I don't like to put heat to a pin or drilling out SS as it gets too hot for my liking.

Joey is right about experimentation. That is what separates the men from the boys in any field or endeavor. If you can improve your methods or process control in any way, then each time you make an improvement the closer you get to world class performance.

It is not about what you learn on your way to becoming and expert that matters. It is what you learn after becoming an expert.
