I will be in Memphis a few days next week. Cany onyone recommend a few places to play?

I will be with some coworkers, so looking for somewhat casual play, clean/safe place, nice tables, and a minimum of smoke if possible.

Thanks,
Kelly

> Two words. High Pockets,on Old Summer Avenue is the place you are looking for. Large, airy room so smoke is never a problem. Old GC-I's with the ashtray corners, some tighter than others, and Simonis. Good atmosphere,no obnoxious music like in trendy spots, best cheeseburger in Memphis 4x,and players to boot. There is golf action on the snooker table, bar boxes too. It's also in just about the safest spot in Memphis, for the most part,I've been going there from 2 hours away for my whole pool life and had ZERO bullshit go down.

The whole place reminds me of exactly what I envisioned as a real poolroom before I even went in the place. Since Starcher's in Akron closed, this is my favorite poolroom on this planet, including the radically-nicer JOB's in Nashville. Tommy D.

There is more to consider

Bartlett Billiards somewhere around 64 or Summer / There is another room on Mt. Moriah but the name slips my mind / High Pockets is by far the largest room there.

high pockets is a nice place. 5099 Old Summer Rd
pretty good review already posted above, lots of good straight pool and 1p games.

'The Rack' at 3622 Lamar Ave, Memphis - (901) 360-9090
9 or so 8' diamonds, 4 diamond bar boxes, 2 or 3 other coinop barboxes. used to be non smoking, but in the last few months, they went 21+ and smoking. great pizza!

then theres my former 'home bar', Sharpshooters, in bartlett. 6955 Stage Rd
4 gc's and 19 or 20 valley barboxes, darts, poker and pretty good food.
if you want action, you can probably find it there, but it has its share of whiners and weight-wanters. mostly 8b & 9b, but straight pool and 1p are getting more and more popular there.

there are a few others scattered about, but these are the main pool rooms i can think of at the moment

sorry to thread dig, but i figured if anyone searched memphis, this might be useful info.

I'm going to be in Memphis next week, and just dug up this thread.

Which place would you be more likely to go to with your wife who plays but doesn't love pool?

Thanks for the info. My wife and I went to High Pockets tonight, and had a nice time. It was pretty empty, but maybe we were some of the few degenerates who wanted to go out and play pool on Christmas.

No more Bartlett...

Bartlett Billiards is shut down. The Rack is Great, I cant even play pool when Im there, because they have a total kicka$$ 3-cushion table.
Highpockets is also awesome. Both places have action, have food, have good players, etc.

If you are through Jackson or anything, try Breakers Billiards if you want some action, or just a good time. I'll try you if noone else will. !! \

And Kelly, don't forget to ask for "Memphis Bill" Rowsey-- one of the owners. He's a southern gentleman who will probably buy you a drink if you tell him you heard about his place on AZbilliards. If you tell him your speed, he'd be able to match you up with a local player. Tell us how it came out!

Hey Doc. The fellow who waited on us at the counter could possibly match that description.

I was with a couple of coworkers, so it was social pool only the night I was there. Thanks, I will remember the name in case I find myself in Memphis again with time to spare...
