planet pool 8 ball update

well i just got back home. needless to say i went out of the tourney early.

anyway.........

about 40-50 people were playing.

the pockets on the tables in first break are H U G E. i mean cavernous......it was so bad it was almost boring playing, everything that came close to a pocket fell. my prediction is that the best player isn't going to win this tourney because of the buckets. people were runing way way way to much. myself included.

when i left, brandon shuff (sp) was already playing his frist match on the elimination side, he lost his first match pretty badly, as i did as well.

my first match was agains chris comstock(sp) and if you don't know who he is, all i have to say is don't miss a ball. i missed 1 shot the entire set, and he pretty much ran out from everywhere. it should have been closer, but i missed some crucial safeties.

my second match was pretty much my fault i lost. the format was alternating break, he won the lag. broke, played safe, then ran out. i broke and ran out. he broke, i missed, he ran out. i broke, we volleyed safes for quite a while, then i ran out. the last game, he started to run out, then missed, i had a WIDE open table and missed an EASY shot about halfway through the run, and that was that. seems to be my luck when i play 8 ball.........2 and out everytime :D

it looks like its shaping up to be a pretty good tourney all in all.

i'll definitely be going to another one when i get the chance.

the next 8 ball tourney will be on 7 foot tables if anyone is a fan of bar pool.

thanks

Sounds like a good time, VAP! :) It looks as if they received a good amount of players for the first 8-ball tournament on the tour, too.

Chris Comstock is a great player. I think he's from Waldorf, Maryland, or used to be. I've seen him in quite a few tournaments in the past. He is a good guy to play, always a gentleman at the table, and, yes, he definitely can break-and-run.

Brandon on the losers' side? Who beat him? Just curious.

i'm not sure, he lost 5-1........but like i said, with those pockets, its anyone's game.

chris was a great opponent. we sat and talked for a few minutes after the match, top notch guy.

thanks

VAP, was this a mixed tournament? How many ladies showed up, and do you know how many players were left in the tourney when you left?

JAM

I'm back now, too. It was a perfect turnout for such a small room. I'm glad there were no more than 50 people playing. I was able to play most matches without waiting. I have to say, the tables I played on were far from generous--spitting balls out left and right whenever hit with pace. I guess they are only cavernous if you hit the center of the pockets! Anyway, I got a bye in the first round, won the second round hill-hill, and lost the third round hill-hill. I never showed up mentally for the losers race and it was over in about 20 minutes. Good luck to those remaining, and good luck JAM tomorrow!

p.s. There were a few women playing (I think 4), and one young girl, maybe 12 years old who was making very difficult shots with confidence. Very impressive!

what numbers did you play on? i played on about 6 of the 11 tables (between practice and play) and all seemed to be VERY loose. maybe i just pracitce on tight equipment.......but i did hear alot of people complaining about the size of the pockets.

thanks

Well, like I said, I wasn't exactly hitting center-pocket, so that is probably the reason I was having some problems. Also the table speed was very slow for what I'm used to, and that encouraged me to hit more firmly. I was on 9 & 11. I practiced on #5, and it did seem more generous. Maybe the lower numbered tables are more generous??? Please don't tell me you also played on 9 & 11!!!

the highest i got to was 8, i did notice that the higher the table, the slower the cloth though.

anyone know who's still in???

I just got back...14 women total....I caught the two and out bug. :( I really need to learn to play on the 9'ers better. AGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH! Anywho, as far as guys go, I really wasn't paying that much attention, but two names stayed stuck in my head. Brandon and Joe (??). They were not playing each other, but they were still in. If I had a list of names I could say if they were still in or not. Sorry I am not much help. Can't wait for the next one...with the 7's I think I stand somewhat of a chance, LOL!!!! :p

Oh, and as far as the pockets being huge...I disagree.

Sorry you weren't there JAM.

Hi All,

I just spoke with Nick Prinsloo at the tournament.

Dave Hunt from Virginia won the tournament defeating Brandon Shuff 7-3. Joe Pasko came in third.

The ladies division was down to 5 players with Amanda Pasko playing Tina Meraglio in the winner's side final. Kathleen Lawless and Janet Keith were in plus one more.

I'll try to get the results up on http://www.planet-pool.com later tonight.
The story should be on AZbilliards.com as well.

Are they really going to be playing on 7' tables at Breaktime in Salisbury? I've never been there, but had considered making the trip down. I don't see any mention of it on the Planet Pool website.

Just curious...

Yes, this is a combined 9ball/8ball event, so I guess the 7's are really the only option as the 9'ers will be used in the 9ball tourney. Nick (??) said that several of the 8ball tourneys would be on 7's. I noticed many of them were at the Salisbury location or TBAs.

Yeah, that makes sense now that I think about it. There are several weekends where the 9ball/8ball will be played together.

Those 7' tables will make alot of us league players happy. I personally prefer playing on 9' tables, but I'm nowhere near as strong on them as I am on the 7's.

I wonder if players will be able to play in both events at the same time?

I am in total agreement with you about playing on the 9'ers. However, every time I play on them you would think that it was the first time I picked up a cue, LMAO. So I am totally elated with the 7's.

I was told that yes, you could play in both and that they would try to arrange it so there are minimal match conflicts, however, there will come a time that you will have to chose which tourney you want to remain in.

Hopefully I will be able to make it to this one too....it is just awfully close to VF and the drive is a bit more than I expected. :(
