Play Tips on Break Cue?!?

Hi AZers out there,

I own an OB break shaft with a Mezz Sonic Tip, but I seem to have problems controlling the Cue ball on the break. Although I have massively increased my break speed and strength, I often have excess draw/follow/english or miscues with the Mezz Tip. I initially broke with a samsara tip that offered more control but the layers delaminate often.

If I were to try a hard PLAY TIP on my break cue, what tip would u recommend considering the below factors???

1. Mushrooming of tip
2. Control
3. Strength/Speed

Thanks Bros.

Two things...

1. Regarding the Samsara break tip, I have never used it, but hear a lot of good things about them. A common problem with layered tips delaminating is that installers can cause too much heat due to friction while trimming them. I hear this comprimises the integrity of the glue. It can be difficult to find a good installer depending on where you are. This is one reason I gave up on laminated tips. So if you had the Samsara tips installed by someone who's skills are suspect, maybe you should be looking for another installer. But if you trust the installer, then yes, look at other tips...

2. To answer the question, I would try a Triangle soaked and pressed very hard. Or perhaps the Water Buffalo brand with the big "WB" on the box.

If you're getting excess spin/miscues on your breaks, the tip may be the least of your problems. Just my two cents, but you might do better to work on hitting center ball rather than changing tips. Good luck!

What he said

I've had Samarsa tips on two break cues and never had a delaminating problem...and I'm not gentle about scuffing, etc.

Thanks guys

Thanks for the various comments...

But are there any other Tips that anyone else would recommend??

Maybe a Kamui Hard?? or a Hard Pressed Tip like LePro??

Outsville SOLID..... durometer is in the range of a hard playing tip but the COR is close to Phenolic.... Send me $10 paypal to scrtimber@aol.com and I'll send you one to try plus a playing tip in the hardness of your choice....
Once they go to a retailer it will be $10 for either

The break tips come out in the next 60 days but I have R&D tips on hand...

You asked about Kamui Hard. I play with hard tips and had a Kamui Black Hard installed on a shaft. It has been the only tip that was too hard for my normal play. I used it as a break tip for a while and it worked great. But it is an expensive break tip.

I haven't tried many of the break tips that were mentioned here, so I cannot comment. I currently use a Talisman Water Buffalo Extra Hard for breaking. I am very happy with it. IMO, it is harder than the Kamui Black Hard. I still prefer phenolic tips for jumping.

I agree with the earlier comment from Pre-Flag Master that heat is a problem for many layered tips. I have also read that moisture can also cause delamination on some layered tips. I avoid both and have been very happy with layered tips.

I used to use a Kamui Hard as my break tip too. It breaks good enough with control. Of course if you want a powerful break, you'll definitely have to sacrifice abit on control.

Just replaced it with a Samsara, gonna give it a try tomorrow.

I use a kamui black hard on my break cue. Breaks and plays great. Maintains shape. Doesnt mushroom.

Whoever installed the Samsara screwed it up. Either too much heat (as was stated already) which breaks the glue down, cutting the tip away from the ferrule with the lathe cut tool as opposed to the proper way of cutting towards the ferrule, or too dull of a cut tool (creates too much heat also)..

White Diamonds are excellent break tips and install unbelievably nice (PM me if you would like one, I have them in various sizes).

For a hard play tip, a Kamui Black is extremely hard, but will put A LOT of spin on the ball. Maybe try a Kamui Original hard for better control..

UltraSkin Heavy Hitter (HH)

When I'm breaking an 8-Ball Rack, I like to put english on the cue ball as much as I can to make the 8-Ball (usually in a side pocket).

I've recently switched to Tom Hay's UltraSkin Heavy Hitter cue tip on my BK2. This allows me to put the english I want on the cue ball when I'm breaking. With a phenolic break tip, I had to hold back and not apply as much english (maybe as little as 25% english) so that I don't miscue. Since installing it, it mushroomed very slightly. I trimmed it on the lathe once, and it hasn't mushroomed again.

Sometimes during league play, I forget that I need to grab my Sly SP (my playing cue) after I break and I end up continuing to shoot with my BK2 throughout the entire game. I don't lose a beat. I can still play normally (99% of the time) and I'm able to put english on the cue ball the entire game. I couldn't do that with my previous break cue with a phenolic break tip.

You don't have to...

I will be offering a break tip that is super hard without being as unforgiving as a phenolic. Getting ever closer to officially launching.
