After reading the post about the recent challenge match, it reminds me of a stakehorse who used to run with a really good bank player (this is 15 years ago, the player is probably someone most players have never heard of, for sure not a household name)

Anyway, one night the stakehorse and the player are sitting around the room (in a different town) and a guy wants to play some. An agreement is made and the two guys start playing. Stakehorse is an older gentleman and goes to bed early. When he went to bed his horse was up something like almost one coin around the table.

To make an even longer story short, horse comes back in middle of the night and staker gets up and says how'd we do? Horse replies I lost 2k (plus the number of the coin games) There was no one else in the room except the houseman behind the counter and he said they chopped everything up.

Stakehorse kept staking the guy but said he would only stake when he was there and could watch. Horse went on to dump (a known fact) several other Stakers.

How about the one where the horse tells his backer that his oponnent will only play if he thinks he doesnt have a backer and the backer can watch but dont talk to his horse and dont act like they know each other. then the horse looses to his oponnent, then the backer pays up to horse cause horse had money on his person to pay other player. horse gets money from backer after match. but no one knew it was a dump not even the oponnent that the horse played. The horse made money on the match without side betting on his oponnent, he made 10k. The set was 10 ahead for 5k they played one set.How did he do it? He had 3 backers. Paid the 5k and then collected 15K from his backers, 5K each. Since they all had to pretend they weren't his backers, they wouldn't know.

In Buddy Hall’s biography he tells about a player that needed $1,000 to play a match. He had a nice cue, and asked someone to lend him $2-300 or so because he wanted to play a money set. He said that if he lost he would give them the cue. He then went to another guy, and borrowed another $2-300. In just a few minutes he had the $1,000 he needed, but he had promised his cue to several different people that would not be good to piss off.

Next thing he knew he was down like 10-4 going to 11. Knowing he was in trouble he deliberately missed a ball late in the rack, then in a display of anger violently snapped his cue over his knee and walked out of the pool hall. Nice trick to get out of that one…

that move is used for tournament entries too. 8 backers and you go and lose. *edit* story i was referring to is right above me. lol reading comprehension is low today

Bunch of gamblers would eat the same restaurant every day. One day a truck roll up piled with watermelons and Amarillo bets he can guess within a certain number how many are on the truck (forget exactly what it was) everyone jumps on the bet.

They all go out and pay the the guy to unload the truck so they can count and sure enough Amarillo nails it and takes them off.

You guessed it. Slim had already paid the guy to unload and count the watermelons earlier so he knew exactly what he was doing. Prop bets are bad news.

That story was taken from Titantic Thompsons book. Slim may have tried the same thing though.

I may be giving too much here, but:

Three guys pull this hustle. Two guys play each other in a new area. The third guy comes in and makes a real point to get in the game. The two guys agree to let him play but must have a partner. This guy gets the mark to play and they play for a while. After playing for a while the guy playing as the mark's partner gets more loud and obnoxious toward one of the opponents.

Eventually enough crap is said until the bet is jacked (of course the mark has been winning a little money for a while). Of course the mark's team loses and before he can argue that he might have been hustled/set up his teammate (who is part of the hustle) attacks the opponent that the mark has just paid. They get kicked out of the bar and take it outside never to be seen again. Of course the other guy is left inside and if done well enough has enough to talk to the mark about what just happened to continue taking his money.
