Was thinking of the sad state of playing pool for a living and was mentally compiling a list of players who gave up playing while still playing great pool.

Allen Hopkins, CJ Wiley, Jimmy wetch, Roger Griffis, Ray Schultz, Teddy Garrahan, Ian Costello, John Hennigin, Nick Schulman, Sparky ferral, Lil john, Troy Frank, John Horsfall, tang Hoa, Dee Adkins, Jon Kucharo, Toby Fleherty, Chris Orme

Who else can you think of that hung it up.

Necessity is forever the mother of invention. They had to put beans on the table and professional pool is not the place to get them. :)

So where are they?

I think most of the names are there, so lets get a post started..., the where are they post?

Troy Frank, John Horsfall, Dee Adkins, Jon Kucharo, Maron Manelo, Evgeny?
Where are these guys????

Evgeny has been playing poker. If I am not mistaken he was at the Derby this year or maybe it was last year.

Someone told me awhile back Dee Adkins got in a really serious accident. Fell off a ladder I believe.

Tang Hoa still plays frequently at Hard Times.

The others I have no idea.

Let's not forget Tommy "The Grinder" Fishbaum. I've got some errands to run so I'll tell you about him later. :)

They didn't quit because of the sad state of pool, pool is alive and well. It is not a fad, and will be around long after all of us are dust. They quit maybe because they stopped hanging on to a delusion that pool is a profession.

Pool is a minor industry and there is money in it in various areas, but it is not a profession as a player. I actually doubt if many have really quit, they just took a reality check. I would hope at that point they can again discover the reasons they started playing the game in the first and again renew their love for the game beyond, "F it, if I can't make a living at pool I'm not playing anymore".
If that is the case, good, screw them they can move on and find a different interest.
It does get tiring to hear theses players complain who think they are owed something.

Yea, Your right?

Thanks for the update - Nine_Ball6970...., as far as guys who thought they could make a living at pool and stopped playing because they cant, well this aint the only thing you cant make a living at, but its a lot more fun.

There are plenty of working poor who aint having no fun at what they do, so if thats why these guys stopped playing, then so be it, but for the love of the game I'm glad that there are plenty that still endure all that must be faded to play this game.

Know for sure Teddy, Ian and Nick Shulman are playing poker. See Teddy and Ian infrequently at the LV Cue Club. Doesn't John Kuchero have a medical problem that keeps him from playing his best? Chris Orme disappeared about a year ago. Last saw him at a Joss event at Salt City Billiards in Syracuse. There is some guy named CJ that posts here from time to time. Wonder if it's the same guy :D! Saw Dee's name on the entry list for the Eastern BCAPL event in Wheeling.

Gandy Valle I think has quit, he was absolutely phenomenal.

Sad that Troy Frank quit, I used to love watching him on the Viking tour.

Don't see Evan Broxmeyer at tournaments these days.

As I sit and think of names of people from the past that have quit, I am also aware of a new generation that has taken their place. There are many top young professionals that have only relatively recently made a splash.

Was Gandy Valle a very young Filipino player who played in the States a few years ago? If so, I commented to Jose Parica (and other friends) he would never last here. Watched him at a Turning Stone event. Never cracked a smile. Not once. Very, very un-Filipino trait. JMHO.

Just for the record playing poker and winning poker are two different things. While some have had success there will be many more that fail. This is not meant to be negative in any way. I understand why so many pool players gravitate to poker. There is no matching up, you always get paid, referees (dealers, floor man), there is immediate action every day for all amounts, and scores can and will be infinitely larger. It is sad that pool can't be the same way.
