Playin' Lucky...

Last night I played a guy in APA Masters. This is the third time I have played him and the third time I have witnessed his incredible luck.

If he doesn't have a shot he bangs at the nine ball it goes a zillion rails kisses 6 balls and goes in. He missed a 9 combo twice in the intended pocket but the nine flies around and ends up going in an unintended pocket for the win.

We switch to 8 ball and he gets two 8's in a row off the break. I don't mean like a clean break 8 in the side. I mean like miss hit the rack cue ball goes a couple rails hits an object ball and kicks the 8 in the corner.

This type of stuff has happened three times in a row. I had to play in a high gear just to beat him 7-6. It's like giving him a 5 game spot.

I feel your pain.

The group I play with has never played call-pocket for any game. When they don't have a good shot they just smash away. Balls go flying everywhere; sometimes even into a pocket. Even though I tie them in knots with a safety, they refuse to even think about playing a safe.

I've gotten two of them to convert to call-pocket...and much to my (and their) amazement, they're actually enjoying it!

My next attempt will be to institute a rule that if you go for the money-ball early (combo the 3 into the 10, etc) and miss, your opponent gets BIH. This is because some of these guys will attempt the craziest early money-ball shots like a table-length combo when they've got an easy 7 through 10 run-out.

That is pretty much how I play and it works pretty well for me, honestly.

Except the 8 on the break part, I never have done that.

At first I was gonna suggest a new league... but if you outrun that kind of luck, you need to stick with a league that doesn't do call-shot and has golden breaks. People need that spot to play you apparently!

To be honest I shot over my head last night. This guy had beaten me twice by one game and two games respectively with a lot of lucky breaks.

I was mentally determined that last night was not going to be the third time.

It's funny, I had never made an 8 on the break in my life until I started in the league I'm in and so far I've made 4 in practice and 2 in matches this session.
