Playing cards

Why do some table installers use
playing cards between the slate
pieces? I have seen this pretty
frequently. Is this good or just a
short cut to matching the slate
pieces up properly?

Thanks
Joe

Between the slate pieces or under them?

I can't think of any good reason to use cards between them.

Using cards under them as shims is pretty harmless as long as its not more than a few, but then again, there are better methods.

Yes, between them.

Yes, between the slate pieces as if they were
trying to open up the gap slightly. I have seen
two layers.

I have seen that!

I have ran into that an I did some research and is called "paper dowels". If the frame on a table is slighty bowed it can make the slates sit weird and they do not want to seam up properly even after you have shimmed/leveled the table properly. anyone else have anything on the topic? types of glue to use ? is it reliable?

As long as you use Hoyle and not Bicycle cards, its fine....LOL
I'm KIDDING !!

Someone will probably kick me in the shin for saying it, but thats a stupid..er um....inappropriate way to deal with the alignment issue.

Look at it this way, do YOU want cards between your own slates?
Or, would you rather have the problem addressed in a mechanically sound way?

Glen has several posts on this topic. It's a way to superglue the slates together, yet still allow them to be easily separated in the future. The super glue only goes on the cards, after all the slates are leveled. The paper cards wick the glue down. I think he actually used business cards not poker cards.

I'm not a mechanic so I can't comment further, but if you search his posts you will come across the relevant threads.

good one bond!

no kickin anyone n the shins! lol. I don't buy tables with problems like that, but, on the occaision I take some maintenance work I may run into this again! I cant fixed a totally jacked up table, but, I can do my best to make it play good! :) On my way to drop off some anniversary corner & side castings to be sand blasted! hope everyone is having a nice day!

The Diamond tables have a leveling system designed so that level adjustments, even seam adjustments, can be made at anytime with the table fully assembled. You definitely need to glue the seams together in order to make these adjustments or you would loose the seam. Secondly, wood is affected by moisture and temperatures, earthquake, houses slowly sliding down hills, people leaning on tables. These are all things that make tables move. It nice to have the slates glue together so you don't have to remove the cloth because you lost the seam alignment when releveling these tables.

Zip Kicker

I prefer to use paper towel pieces between the slate, then hit it with a shot of zip kicker to accelerate the bonding process.

The paper towel does a better job of absorbing the glue than, for example, business, index or playing cards.

Works nicely indeed.

I searched but came up dry !!

So if I understand correctly you can
put a business card between the slates,
add a touch of superglue and join the two
together and still be able to separate them
in the future. Sweet!!

Kudus to Glen. He is very smart and very
experienced. If I thought he would ever be
in my part of the country I would wait and
have him do my table.

By the way, I did do a search on this topic
and didn't get a hit. Maybe I did the search
wrong.

My table frame is crowned end to end on one
side and dips on the other side. It's gonna take
some figuring when I get ready to put the slates
back on.

Thanks for your replies and opinions,
Carry On and shoot straight !!

Most of all playing cards today are waxed playing cards- not good for slate dowel bonding..."would be like smearing bondo over bees wax in the slate seams". Not much of anything adheres to wax.
I've always kept construction paper/felt paper in the tool box for slate bonding or just plane ol' note book paper works good to, jay from A-1 billiards shared his knowledge of slate bonding in alsip and a quick inexpensive way to accelerate superglue to set-up.

For all of AZ' do yourself a favor and don't use playing cards for slate dowels when using CA glue.

Yeah I probably should have explained my shin kicker a little more...the wax coating isn't gonna help you wick....that and the suggestion that cards should be used to assist with an alignment issue = bad mojo

Fyi today is sunday - go eat some pancakes
